Cancellation of JYJ documentary leads some to wonder about SM Entertainment‘s influence
A screening of “The Day”, a documentary on the daily life of K-pop group JYJ, was cancelled Monday, prompting questions over the real reason for cancellation. JYJ’s management C-Jes Entertainment stated “‘The Day’ was to be released in theaters on Feb. 9 in more than 20 CGV theaters. The relevant contracts had been signed. But on Jan 20, one day after initial reporting on the film, CGV unilaterally gave us notice of cancellation.” C-Jes Entertainment also stated, “We filed claims to the Fair Trade Commission and the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission on Jan 27. In addition, we are taking steps to file law suits.”*
Initially, “The Day” was to be shown on cable TV channel QTV, but this plan was also suddenly cancelled just a few days before the screening. In reaction to this, the film version to be shown in theaters, but this has failed as well.
CGV is an affiliate of CJ E&M, which operates the music channel Mnet. As a result, suspicion has arisen amongst fans that companies could be minding SM Entertainment, members of JYJ‘s former management.
In response, CGV explained, “External pressure from SM Entertainment is nonsense.” It added,“There have been many internal issues such as not having had internal screening, therefore we made the decision to cancel the screening.”

After ‘Clap’ and ‘Supa Luv’, with ”No More Perfume On You’ on 2011, the group that has definitely targeted the hearts of noona fans is TEEN TOP. In 2012, with ‘Crazy’, as the name suggests, it is driving the fans crazy.
Having done the so-called ‘fierce’ songs in the past, TEEN TOP is in the spotlight once again with the rhythmical melody in ‘Crazy’ Before KBS 2TV on the 27th, met up with TEEN TOP and asked “Do you feel your popularity” and they were shy about it.
On stage they seem to be overflowing with confidence, but in the waiting room they are still the shy teenagers who love to joke around.
L.Joe laughed “Even Andy hyung went through this”
“We feel our popularity during music programmes more fans turn up. During pre recordings the screams are really loud, after conquering the hearts on noonas with ‘No More Perfume On You”, in real life (the number of noona fans) has really increased. In the music video for ‘Crazy’ L.Joe became the main focus of the fans”
L.Joe who smiles alot, kept smiling brightly during the interview. Because he smiles too much, he was even told off by the representative of the company i.e the senior in the music industry, Andy.
He explained “I haven’t smiled much in performances this time round, because I’ve to maintain the chic-ness but I’ll give smile once in a whole”
This song required even greater effort to fully express the song so they had put in a lot of effort to practise live performances. It’s a must to practise at the recording studio with Brave Brothers for ‘Crazy’, and to make sure that their voices don’t shake during live performances, they practised singing while running on a treadmill TEEN TOP dreaming of becoming ‘Earth idols’
“Promise to the public when we get 1st place? It’s a secret”
Recently it’s a trend for singers to set public promises; “I’ll do this and this when I win 1st place” “Previously we’ve gave promises like “We’ll walk on our hands on stage” “We’ll do acrobatics” etc.. But every time we do that, we only end up being 1st place contenders” “To actually win 1st place, our public promise will be a secret”
TEEN TOP has many nicknames like ‘handcuff-idols’ ‘holiday-idols’; when asked what other nickname do they want to add to the list in the future, they chose ‘Earth-idols’ It has the meaning of TEEN TOP wanting to be know in any part on Earth Will the 6 men achieve the results in 2012? TEEN TOP is planning for their Japanese advancement
“For one, we haven’t been able to sleep much, we haven’t been able to experience school life like the rest and we’re drifting apart from our friends. But this is something all of us want to do. We’re teachers in life as compared to the others as we started life in society earlier.” Because we have to sync their dances, we only have activities twice a year, so the nickname of ‘holiday-idols’ was created. We’ll work hard in order to meet our fans more frequently in the future”

A union strike has led to the cancellation of hit variety shows on the MBC network. The media company regretfully announced on Jan. 31 that following the protest of some 500 workers on Jan. 30 flagship programs due to air over the weekend of Feb. 4 and 5, such as “We Got Married,” “Infinite Challenge,” “The Great Birth” and “I Am a Singer,” will not air. Instead, re-runs of special edition shows will be broadcast. However, programs that are outsourced to external production companies will be aired as scheduled.

The strike, orchestrated by the MBC labor union, is calling for the resignation of the network’s current president Kim Jae-chul. “We are calling for an end to distorted news coverage that is currently taking place at MBC under Kim Jae-chul’s leadership. We won’t stop until justice and impartiality is restored to our programs. Until then, we ask the viewers to support us in our endeavor,” said a representative from the union.

There was also a protest when Kim was nominated for the presidency back in May of 2010. Kim is thought to be a puppet of President Lee Myung-bak which has resulted in biased news reports. “We have a duty to serve the public through maintaining neutrality in our news programs,” said the union representative. Through the protest, it is hoped that Kim will step down from the leadership position.

Meanwhile in Seoul, a photo exhibition of the show “Infinite Challenge” has attracted some 243,000 visitors to Lotte Mall in Gimpo International Airport since it was unveiled on Dec. 22. The exhibition ended on Jan. 15 and MBC said that it did not expect such a large number of visitors.
