[News] Super Junior Becomes Captivated by Modern American art

"I like this picture. While it's lonely, the colors are pretty. I want to take a picture of something like this." (Sungmin)

"I feel said because it brings back memories of times when I had to go home at sundown after playing with friends…” (Ryeowook)

"I don't like being depressed. What's that rippling in the picture? Ah, I thought it was a wave but it's actually a mountain!" (Shindong)

The three young men stood in front of Edward Hopper's 1929 painting “Railroad Sunset” which depicts the sun setting on a railroad station. They are members of Super Junior that are comprised of 13 members. They have hit songs such as "Sorry Sorry" and "Miinah" which have addicting and intense electronic sound. Recently, they are gaining more popularity with the release of their new song "Mr. Simple." They took time out from their busy schedule to view the Whitney museum exhibition "The American art."

Shindong who says he has never been to an art museum before showed a big interest in Claes Oldenburg's "Giant Saw Soft Version" which is a cloth in the shape of a saw. "At first, I didn't know why this was art. But after listening to the explanation that a hard object was remade with a soft material, I realized that it becomes an art because the artist thought of an idea that I couldn't come up with."

The members of Super Junior are viewing Roy Lichtenstein’s “Still Life with Crystal Bowl” at “The American Art” exhibition which is being held at Seoul National Museum of Art, Deoksugung.

When Ryeowook viewed Dan Flavin’s “Untitled” (1964) which is seven fluorescent lights placed together, he said, “just like this artwork, instead of having separate lights, I want to put fluorescent lights together." Ryeowook also said, “art is something that gives people power to come up with new thoughts." When Sungmin stood in front Marisol Escobar’s “Women and Dog,” he said, “it’s memorable how the three adults look fake while the young girl truthfully expresses her emotion by frowning.”

After viewing the exhibition, the members of Super Junior said, “we were able to relax and clear our thoughts by visiting the museum." Afterward, photos were taken of them at the photo zone which was provided by the gallery.
