From lapsed ’90s metalheads to the glossiest girls of today’s generation, the best of the sublimely shiny sound that’s sweeping the world

Twenty years after its birth, Korean pop music has made its way from Seoul to Singapore to San Antonio to São Paulo and back again, “outbubbling” — as SPIN’s Chuck Eddy phrased it last year — its Western counterpart by tweaking and perfecting the formula on which both have long been based. It’s music that demands to be mainlined (hooks come sharper, choruses larger, visuals brighter), its gloss equaled only by the aggressiveness with which it’s been delivered to the international marketplace in recent years. By now, K-pop’s catalog of classics is deep enough to warrant a best-of list of its own, one we’ve assembled with our ears pointed to both past and present: The 21 Greatest K-Pop Songs of All Time, a singles wrecking crew whose final, odd-numbered tally is a loving tribute to one of the current moment’s most beloved girl groups, 2NE1.

“Dancing On My Own,” a new song of the popular British singer Pixie Lott, topped the pop charts on April 30 immediately after it was released. Big Bang’s G-Dragon and T.O.P were featured in the song.

The song received wide attention in Korea even before it was released. It ranked first on real-time charts on Naver Music, Bugs, Soribada, and Olleh Music.

G-Dragon and T.O.P played distinctive roles in the song as a rapper and a vocalist. Pixie Lott asked G-Dragon and T.O.P to work together after she heard their music on YouTube.

Pixie Lott is coming to Korea in May to promote her new album. She’s going to stay in Korea for three days to celebrate the release of the de luxe version of her album in Asia.

Born in 1991, Pixie Lott is a singer-songwriter and an actress. Her debut single album Mama Do, released in June 2009, ranked first on the single charts, and she was selected as the most promising new artist in 2010 by the U.S. Billboard magazine. In 2010, she received three awards at Brit Awards.

Poised at the intersection of two countries’ fast-moving pop cultures and cutting-edge media technology, the sprawling genre colloquially known as K-pop has operated outside the American pop limelight. But that’s changing. A-list producers like will.i.am, Diplo and Kanye West are lining up to work with South Korean artists like 2NE1, GD&TOP and JYJ.

The overwhelmingly single-gender bands, cast by talent agencies for Korean corporate label conglomerates like SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment, created fierce and ever-evolving loyalties — imagine picking your favorite Beatle or Rolling Stone if there were 10 of them.

Songs and especially videos were quickly passed over high-speed Internet and mobile devices several times faster than what’s available in America. Sites like AllKPop and magazines like KoreAm chronicled the exploits of the young, fashionable and lightly transgressive stars — when GD&TOP and pop singer Hyuna saw singles banned by South Korea’s major broadcasting networks, that made for delicious scandal. In August, Billboard launched a K-Pop Hot 100 chart to track the genre’s sales.

Pixie Lott, K-pop ambassador.

A pop star in her own right in her native UK, with three No. 1 singles under her belt, she’s all set to fly the flag for Korean boy and girl bands.

First step?
Collaborating with G-Dragon and T.O.P. from K-pop quintet Big Bang on her new song Dancing On My Own, which will be featured in the Asian Deluxe version of her second album Young Foolish Happy, out in early May.

Lott drops by Singapore on May 18 for an invite-only showcase at Zirca.

She will be signing copies of her latest album Young Foolish Happy for fans on May 17 at Bugis Junction.

Speaking to LOUD over the phone from her home in London, Lott, 21, was enthusiastic about her love of the genre.

“I think it was the first time I went to Japan, and got to know about the bands that were starting to get big there,” she said.

“I just loved the whole vibe of it. The music videos are so crazy, so futuristic,” she said. “I was so interested in the whole craze, and how huge it had become."

“It’s a really fresh sound.”

Plotting a K-pop collaboration, she settled on working with the Big Bang boys, who were just as keen on partnering up with her.

“I became such a big fan of theirs (GD&TOP/BIGBANG), and when I heard that they wanted to collaborate as well, I was so excited,” said Lott.

Though the dance and hip-hop elements of K-pop are what she fell for initially, the collaboration is more of an R&B ballad, with G-Dragon and T.O.P. handling rapping duties.

“They have a great dance vibe, but I think it was cool for us to do something a little bit different,” said Lott. “I think it shows their fans something different as well.”

Though she met the boys in Japan during the Spring Groove festival earlier this month , she’s never been to Korea, and plans to swing by after her trip to Singapore.

We reported earlier that SBS ‘K-Pop Star’ top 3 finalists are set to hold a special collaboration stage performances with representatives of three big agencies, YG, SM and JYP Entertainments.

On April 19th, ‘K-Pop Star’ production team confirmed the final partnering for the collaboration stages. It has been revealed that Baek Ah Yeon will be teaming up with Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Tiffany to show their own rendition of “Lady Marmalade.”

Other finalists, Lee Ha Yi will be performing with miss A while Park Ji Min will be joined by Big Bang’s T.O.P and G-Dragon.

Though the three agencies didn’t cast anyone among the Top 3 finalists, they will compete against each other under the same condition as the finalists will be helped by its artists.

There have been some pretty good Kpop and Western collaborations before (BoA and Britney springs to mind) and I’m not suggesting GD&TOP’s song with British singer Pixie Lott is the greatest. However, I think it’s pretty good all the same.
I’ve already talked about Pixie in a previous article, but basically she rose to fame with soulful dance pop and when her second album didn’t quite live up to the first, she decided to try her luck over here. Undoubtedly talented but in need of a boost, Pixie saw an MV of Big Bang’s rappers and asked YG if they fancied featuring on her Japanese album. Never ones to miss an opportunity, YG agreed, and “Dancing On My Own” is the product.

I wasn’t very keen on Pixie’s original version of this, I felt it was static, lacking charisma or interest. Now, say what you like about GD&TOP, but they certainly aren’t lacking in those departments. This new version is on a whole different level.

GD hasn’t sounded this sexy in a long time and TOP sounds like he has been collaborating with Pixie for years. There is an ease in this song that some groups struggle to get after years; it’s a real testament to all three artists that they can sound this natural with so little experience of each other’s styles. Marty James, who featured in Pixie’s English version wasn’t bad, but he was also completely forgettable.

Maybe it’s the different accents, or the distinct style, but both G-Dragon and TOP command your attention and keep it. YG idols tend to be pretty good at English, and their English was close to perfect, useful if this song transfers to European airwaves. English not Japanese or Korean rapping and singing was a wise move; a huge part of Pixie’s audience would have cut out otherwise. There is something thrilling about hearing a favorite Kpop idol sounding fluent in English, and TOP’s pronounciation was so nearly spot on. He even did a bit of singing, and his smoky voice held GD’s higher and slightly more energetic and Pixie’s sensuous voices together.

It’s more emotive and nostalgic than the last version, the overlapping voices make it sound like the song could refer to anyone, not just those three. I particularly liked GD at the end, putting his “Blue” vocals to work. Was it just me, or did Pixie sound better too? She seems to have relaxed into the music more and embraced her jazzy roots.

But that is enough fangirling; there are a few tweaks I’m itching to make. While the lyrics work fine, I would have loved the boys to write their own lyrics. It would have been a great learning curve for them, and further showcased their talents to the Western audience. Their lyrics are very good but I would have loved to see GD&TOP’s take on the chorus.  I think it would be fairer to say GD&TOP feat. Pixie Lott, but she held her own, YG did after all, call this a duet – I only wish I could see this live.

I’m guessing a PV isn’t happening, because it would be interesting to see if the artists retain their own style or if there is a K-Euro fusion. Pixie has always stuck to a rather safe wardrobe while GD&TOP…haven’t; for proof, see their current hair.

Perhaps because it’s low-key, the netizens outrage has been equally muted. Most people seem genuinely pleased with the result, and while there are the usual “thumbs up if you are only here for TOP and GD/Pixie”, a lot of people are willing to further investigate the new artist. Pixie is considered a million times cooler for such a collaboration and there is new clamour for the boys to release an English album. It is pretty much what the record labels were hoping for, and better than the hate that could so easily have turned against them.

As soon as it was released I waited patiently for the trickle of Kpop atheists to beg for forgiveness for ever doubting the talents in Kpop. Well, not really, but I’m hoping this song will get them exposure. I always felt after their win at the EMAs not much was done to keep that interest, but that could change. I’ve yet to hear it on the radio, although I tried to stay tuned. If anyone has heard it do leave your comments, I’m hoping it has been played somewhere!
