Jang Yoon-jung, who became a sensation when she embraced Korea's oldest pop genre, trot, a decade ago, will hold a concert next month at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. Jang shot to prominence following her debut in 2003 because, at the time, it was rare for a young singer to adopt the genre associated with older people.

Observers say it is quite unprecedented for a young singer to perform at such a prestigious venue, which is known to be picky about choosing artists and performers. Until now, the venue has only granted the privilege to veteran singers and classical performers.

Jang said she felt "lonely" over the past decade due to the lack of competition in the declining genre. "If someone had been competing with me, I think the genre would have grown stronger," she said. "It's sad when someone disappears gradually from people’s memories without facing any challenge."

Jang experienced a major shock two months ago when her father suffered a stroke. "I heard the bad news just before I was due to perform a concert and I was barely able to hold back my tears while singing," she recalled.

"I was tormented by thoughts about what I was doing, but I knew that I had to keep my promise to my fans," she said. "But I cried after I got off the stage. I don't think I ever cried so much as that."

Jang is still in peak form, but the music industry has undergone radical changes since she debuted. "I am thankful that there is still a place for me at annual musical awards and other entertainment events," she said. "But the truth is that it has become increasingly difficult for singers to build long careers nowadays."

Trot singer Jang Yoon Jung’s music video to her hit-song “Call the Soul” has been banned on three terrestrial networks - MBC, SBS and KBS - as it was deemed unfit for viewing by those under 15 years of age.

The networks stated that the video contained violence as well as illogical, supernatural themes deemed “contrary to science.”

The music clip focuses on a tragic death of a beloved, prompting her bereaved lover to recruit the help of a female shaman to perform an exorcism in a bid to bring back his girlfriend’s soul.

What made the clip more controversial was the fact that a famed exorcist did take part in the video, and an actual exorcism ritual was really filmed.

Meanwhile Jang’s agency is defending the singer’s decision, saying, “The song contains elements of traditional folklore and to keep it real, we decided to film a real exorcism,” said a representative from Jang’s agency.

The agency added that it will re-edit the video and appeal for a second case so that the video may be shown on TV.

The man behind the fake nude pictures of trot singer Jang Yoon Jung has been caught. The Dongjak Police Precinct in Seoul announced on Feb. 22 that the man, a Daejeon security guard in his 50s, has been indicted for spreading a doctored photo of a nude Jang back in 2005.

But as the crime was committed more than five years ago, the police said the statute of limitations had expired and that they could not pursue charges against the guard.

“He claimed that he spread the material but didn’t create the image himself. He also claims that he does not remember the site from which he downloaded the photo,” a Dongjak Police representative said.

Despite it being seven years old, the image has been spreading rampantly lately, especially on smartphones with photo-sharing applications.

Jang filed a complaint with the police on Feb. 14, when she first came across the picture. The case was then assigned to the Dongjak Police for investigation.

Trot singer Jang Yoon-jung has denied that she is the woman in a photo called “Jang Yoon-jung nude” that is making the rounds on the Web.

The singer’s agency announced on Monday that it is currently in the process of filing a complaint with police and the Korea Communications Commission, claiming that someone edited the photo and pasted Yoon’s body onto a naked female model.

The agency said it will stand firmly against the person who produced and uploaded the picture.
“We will take legal action against the perpetrator if Yoon’s career suffers because of this incident,” said a representative from the agency.

Jang said she is stunned but used humor to mock the situation on Twitter, writing: “I admit the face is 100 percent mine. But the body! I don’t have such a glamorous body. Although I’m laughing at this ridiculous photo, I promise that the person who started all this won’t be laughing by the time we get to the bottom of it.”
Jang made her debut in 1999 and is best known for her hit trot song “Oh My.”
