K-pop has taken the world by storm as the Korean Wave sweeps across Asia, Europe and the Americas. Now it’s made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary.

Recently, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) announced that “K-Pop” has officially been added to their vocabulary list. It defines “K-Pop” as “Korean pop music” and put it under a mass noun category.

Oxford English Dictionary is one of the oldest and most used English dictionaries in the world. Being listed in the OED is the latest sign of the Hallyu’s growing popularity.

The day of K-Pop's demise is getting closer. Whispers have begun to leak out of Fuji TV, one of the driving forces behind K-Pop in Japan, saying, "We cannot get ratings with this at all," signaling a beginning in the dismantling of the Hallyu.

Starting with the scandal of actor Takao Sosuke criticizing Fuji TV for creating the Korean boom by force in Japan, unpleasant feelings towards the wave as well as K-Pop started forming, centered online. With these feelings growing stronger, K-Pop acts KARA and Supernova saw their concert in Hyogo prefecture cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Even still, TV networks are trying to push the "K-POP BOOM" as always, but it's getting to the point where the lack of popularity is becoming hard to hide.

Finally, talk from within Fuji TV itself lamenting the lack of popularity of K-Pop currently have leaked.

"Now if a K-Pop idol goes on a TV show, honestly the numbers seem to fall. KARA and Shojojidai's decline in ratings is not as bad, but those groups with names no one knows have a real problem with ratings. Their staffs seem greatly perplexed. It seems that the day that K-Pop and the Korean Wave won't be heard from again is coming soon," said one Fuji TV employee.

As this authorized person said, it's been clear that TV shows have been pulling back on K-Pop related programming. For example, last year's "Natsu ga Kita!! HEY! HEY! HEY! Odaiba 'Nama' no Uta Matsuri" special featured multiple Korean idols groups, both popular artists and unknowns. However, this time the only one appearing will be Tohoshinki.

This year's "FNS Uta no Natsu Matsuri" will also not be featuring Korean idols.

One person related to a major network said, "Asahi TV, who does 'Music Station' recently decided to distance themselves from K-Pop. Besides the necessary Korean artists, they won't be allowing K-Pop idols on the show. They just don't get the ratings, and the network is getting flack from viewers online so it has to be like this."

There are quite a few artists aiming to have a hit in Japan, but it seems the situation has gotten stricter.

K-pop’s significance worldwide and specifically in Argentina was reported by an Argentinean news channel on July 19.

According to Lee Jong-ryul, the principal of the Korean Cultural Institute based in South America, C5N devoted one episode on the program “En el Lugar Justo” to the phenomenon that is K-pop.

On the episode that aired on the 19th and again on the 21st, the program described K-pop as “a genre that is sweeping throughout the globe; much like a global trend.” In specific, the prominence of K-pop in Argentina was looked at with special attention being drawn to K-pop cover dance festivals and fan clubs.

K-pop was deemed the bridge that links Korea and Argentina as demand for Korean food, drama and the language in general is set to be soaring over there, all stemming from the love of Korean music.

“The reason for the genre’s popularity is the fusion of western beats and eastern rhythm and dance,” C5N reported.

“The fact that K-pop was investigated on a mainstream news channel shows just how big K-pop is in South America,” said Lee.

A seminar about the possible construction of a K-pop concert venue will take place on February 29 in Mokdong, western Seoul.

“Currently, the market for K-pop concerts is increasing at a tremendous 40 percent per annum. Yet the only venue that is capable of accommodating more than 10,000 people at once is the Olympic Hall in southeastern Seoul,” said a representative from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

As Olympic Hall is booked out most of the year, the Ministry said that production companies are having problems finding adequate K-pop concert venues.

At the seminar, experts on the Korean music scene, as well as representatives from the construction and tourism industries will talk about all aspects of building the venue. Professor Go Jung-min from Hongik University will talk about the directions and issues surrounding the building of a concert hall while representatives from SM Entertainment and the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute will also be present to discuss the matter.

Whether you’re a shopaholic, a workaholic, a K-Pop fanatic, a foodie, a filmmaker, or just plain superstitious: 2012 is a good year to be here. 2012, the year the world supposedly ends. All the more reason to visit Korea — the Land of Morning Calm — to soothe your terror before the world is destroyed by a meteorite.

And 2012 is also the Year of the Dragon, according to the Chinese zodiac. And not only that, but it’s also the Year of the Black Dragon, which only comes once around every 60 years. But there’s more than cool East Asian symbolism to make 2012 a great year for visiting Korea.

There are 12 reasons, listed below:

1. It’s Visit Korea Year
2. Korea Grand Sale
3. Hallyu Madness
  • 2012 is looking to be a good year for K-Pop.
If you’re a devoted follower, you might already know that there are several big comebacks in the works, like an upcoming Big Bang concert, or Se7en’s new album. You might also know that 2ne1 will be releasing their collaborations with will.i.am.

But if all this is hard to remember, you can just remember one: the 21st Seoul Music Awards, which will be held on January 19, 2012, at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, which will be the K-Pop event of the next year.

And it just so happens that the date of the awards ceremony coincides with the period of the Korea Grand Sale. Coincidence? Or clever maneuvering on the part of the Visit Korea Committee? Doesn’t matter; saw Big Bang!

4. The IFC Fulfill Its Destiny
5. Celebrating Food
6. The 2012 Expo in Yeosu
7. Because it’s not just about Seoul this year
