It isn’t only good looks and great talent that the public want from their stars. A good character is what the public deems most important for a star to have. Good manners are key to raising one’s popularity and likability. On the 26th of July, Yoo Jae Seok showed his great character when he helped a grandmother with her stroller in the middle of a TV program’s challenge. On the other hand, KARA’s Goo Hara(20) became a target of criticism when she called out the names of her seniors without the appropriate titles. There have been other instances in which the words and actions of celebrities were interpreted as disrespectful to their fellow celebrities.

◆Famous for being well-mannered
Yoo Jae Seok and Leessang’s Gary(33) helped an elderly woman go down a steep slope during the episode of ‘Running Man’ that aired on the 26th. The celebrity garnered much attention when he walked up to the grandmother without faltering in order to help move her stroller with her grandson in it. In front of the steep slope, he kept saying, “I’ll help you to the bottom of the slope,” while holding on to the stroller and showed his worry for her as he said, “There are more slopes down there, till where do you need to go?” Yoo Jae Seok showed his shining thoughtfulness by helping out an elderly woman and her grandson at a steep slope.

Jang Dong Gun(39) was praised by Lim Ha Ryong(59, actor) in April as he said, “He is more well-mannered than most actors.” Lim Ha Ryong appeared on KBS 2TV’s ‘On A Roll’ and said, “My rival is Jang Dong Gun,” and “Not only is he good at acting, but he’s well-mannered, even with such good looks.” He continued to say, “Though he’s atop star, he’s still so modest and I think he’s quite amazing.” In 2009, Jang Dong Gun appeared in a radio program and said, “What is most important in relationships between people is manners and etiquette.”

Kim Sae Rom highly praised Jo In Seong’s polite manner and chose him as the greatest actor she’s met in her reporting career. Kim Sae Rom appeared on QTV’s ‘Girl who chooses ranks’ and said, “I was moved by Jo In Seong’s polite manner during his interview. I saw him greeting every screenwriter, director and reporter present with a 90 degrees bow.”

Kim Jung Tae(39) of MBC’s ‘Miss Ripley’ praised actor and singer Park Yoochun(25). On his personal Twitter account, Kim Jung Tae stated, “Park Yoochun is very polite. Anyone can see his willingness to learn and hard work.” Park Yoochun’s brother Park Yoohwan(20), who is currently acting in MBC’s ‘Shiny Shiny Shining’, also talked about his brother’s good manners. He revealed, “I didn’t have much of a social life during my 10 years in America, so I learned my manners from my brother.”

◆ Free spirited or rude behavior?
KARA’s Goo Hara was swept up in controversy when she talked down to her seniors during the episode of ‘Running Man’ that aired on the 26th. She called MC Yoo Jae Seok ‘Mr. Yoo’ and actress Song Ji Hyo(30) ‘Ji Hyo’ and received much criticism for it. The scene in which Goo Hara said, “Our Ji Hyo has changed,” to provoke Song Ji Hyo had viewers frowning in discomfort. On the 27th, Goo Hara apologized on her personal Twitter account and said, “I’ve done wrong. I was only thinking about making the show fun and I made a mistake,” and “I’ll be more careful in the future and I will always work hard.”

Actress Seo Woo(26) was called a ‘rude star’ by netizens when she had side conversations while her coworkers were sharing stories on KBS 2TV’s ‘Happy Together’. While Moon Geun Young was answering a question posed by one of the MCs, Seo Woo had a whispered conversation with 2PM’s Taecyeon and burst out into unnecessary laughter. While listening to Chun Jung Myung’s stories of his military service days, Seo Woo pointed out, “He always talks about his military service.” To this, Park Myung Soo indirectly criticized the actress’ behavior when he said, “You’re a mean one.”

Many actors were called out for watching the celebratory performances of singers with no expression on their faces during an awards ceremony at the end of 2010. While Girls’ Generation performed their hits ‘Oh!’ and ‘Hoot’, actors including Choi Daniel, Wonbin, Jeon Do Yeon and Kang Soo Yeon were seen watching the performance with an uninterested expression. To this, several singers such as SG Wannabe’s Lee Seok Hoon, The Name and Psy criticized these actors and called them out of line and rude. On his personal Twitter account, Lee Seok Hoon stated, “Is it so hard to clap and smile? They’re going too far,” while The Name said, “I can’t set aside this uncomfortable feeling as a viewer. They’ve come to celebrate your appearance and but you sit there with no expression.”

Super Junior has appeared as “Super Actor-dols*”. Following “Sorry Sorry”, “Miinah” and other songs which aren’t only receiving huge popularity in the country but also across Asia, and after producing a collection of big hits, Super Junior’s members Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and others are receiving attention as the next generation’s MCs in variety programs; (in addition) Shindong, Donghae, and Sungmin are also simultaneously involved in dramas, making a strong presence as “Super Actordols”. It could be seen that among 13 members, there are seven of them who are building their careers in the drama scene. Shindong takes on the role of the Judo athlete Kang Wooram on SBS’s “Doctor Champ”, and has received a lot of attention from the viewers. Being a judo athlete during his elementary school days, he has shown his natural side in the drama, and is responsible for creating laughter in the show. Donghae begins his acting career in SBS’s “It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl”. Playing the role of the honest and sincere Choi Wook-gi, has displayed commendable acting skills recently at his first recording, and was well-received by the staff. Donghae has added colours to the typical sincere character, and produced a distinctly different character. He is expected to show a splendid idol member’s image and display a completely different side of him. In the KBS drama “President”, Sungmin will be playing the role of the trouble-making graduate student Jang Sungmin, the son of Choi Soojong and Ha Heera in the drama. He wishes to try his hand in politics himself, and although he has the intention to help his father out in the election process, but got into trouble instead when he used the wrong methods. There is high anticipation with regards to how he would act out the role of the president’s ambitious son. It can be seen that the Super Junior members have accumulated a lot of experiences in the drama field. Before this, Choi Siwon has received high acclaim for playing the lead role of the SBS drama “Oh! My Lady”, which would be followed by his casting in SBS’s “Athena” as a new agent (of NSS), thus attracting attention as a rising young actor. Aside from that, Kim Heechul has also received attention for his role in SBS’s “Golden Bride**” among others. Kangin has played the role of a couple manager in MBC Dramanet’s “Romance Zero***”, and Kibum collected his popularity earlier through the KBS youth drama “Banolim”. With the addition of three members who will be building their experiences in the drama field, Super Junior has now 7 members out of 13 who have a drama-acting career. One of the officials from their agency SM Entertainment said that “From the beginning, Super Junior debuted with the aim of not only singing songs, but also being involved in variety shows and the acting field” and that “since it’s their 5th anniversary since debut this year, it is a perfect occasion to take hold of a clear position, and receive more ‘love calls’ in various fields”. * Actor-dols are a combination of the words 'actor' and 'idol'. Meaning they're idol actors.
** Golden Bride (황금신부/Hwang Geum Shin Bu) is a 64-episode drama which was aired between June 2007 and February 2008.
*** Romance Zero (하자 전담반 제로/Haja Jeondamban Zero) is a 16-episode drama that was aired between February - May 2009. The phrase 'couple manager' basically means matchmaker.

Singers are dominating Wednesday-Thursday dramas

On the 29th and 30th of last month, the lead actors in each of the Wednesday-Thursday dramas on the 3 different broadcast channels were all singers. In addition to SS501′s Kim Hyun Joong’s MBC “Playful Kiss” and Lee Seung Gi’s SBS “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho,” Rain’s KBS “Runaway Plan B” just began.

And this doesn’t include just the main leads. Park Soo Jin and No Min Woo were in “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” and Danny Ahn is in “Runaway Plan B.” JYJ’s Mickey Yoochun is the main lead in Monday-Tuesday KBS drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and Park Jung Ah is playing a supporting role in daily KBS drama “Laugh Dong Hae.” Also, Nam Gyuri played the role of the youngest daughter of the lead family in SBS “Life is Beautiful” and Tara’s JiYun will play the lead role in an upcoming KBS drama set to premiere next month.

Rain and Lee Seung Gi also stand victorious as actors

However, the acting ability of singer-actors are typically not on par with full-time actors. For example, although Kim Hyun Joong and Mickey Yoochun’s star status landed them lead drama roles, they are still insufficient in many ways as actors.

However, there are cases like Rain and Lee Seung Gi in which they have not only stood tall and victorious as singers, but as actors as well.
Advancing even into Hollywood through movies “Ninja Assassin” and “Speed Racer,” and through dramas “Let’s go to school Sang Doo,” Full House,” and “A Love to Kill,” Rain’s acting ability has become solid over time. Through this foundation, he is putting on a one man show and gaining much admiration for “Runaway Plan B.” He is showing skills rivaling many actors, not only through his physical action, but also in his quick and effective line delivery and comical acting.

Having the support of men and women of all ages, Lee Seung Gi has also established a good reputation as an actor. Showing his acting potential through his role as Hwang Tae Ja in 2006 KBS drama “Famous Princesses,” and then returning last year as the male lead for SBS drama “Brilliant Legacy” which recorded a high 47.1% tv viewership rating, he is quickly rising to join the ranks of A-list actors.
Also as the male lead in “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho,” he showed strength in carrying out the drama by effectively leading his co-star Shin Min Ah.

If Shin Min Ah was able to rid herself of her CF star label through this drama, then you could say Lee Seung Gi increased his firm footing as an actor by showing great depth and acting potential.
Having received acting lessons during their spare time as singers, these two persons are displaying the qualities of prepared actors. skip . . . . Due to the difficulties associated with carrying out both singing and acting simulataneously, many singers have chosen to focus solely on their acting. More than anything, singers change to full-time actors because the life expectancy of a singer is typically way shorter than than of an actor.

Representative examples include Lim Chung Jung, Yoon Eun Hye, Sun Yuri, Yoon Kye Sang, Hwang Jung Eom, Nam Gyuri, Park Soo Jin, Park Jung Ah
On the other hand, there are idol stars like SNSD’s Yoona, 2pm’s Taec Yeon, Super Junior’s Choi Si Won, Big Bang’s Top, Tara’s JiYun and EunJung, DBSK’s YunoYuno who have attracted attention for taking on acting while still being active as singers.

It has continuously been pointed out that Hallyu stars who are actively performing overseas rarely arrange performances and events for Korean fans.

Hallyu stars reportedly consistently neglect Korean fans and usually do not have much contact with fans in Korea; on the other hand, they have adopted friendly images to the public overseas by holding large-scale fan meetings and releasing photo and music albums.

Hallyu star Kwon Sang Woo, who evoked criticism with a hit-and-run last month, has raised controversy because he delivered a message of apology on his official Japanese fan website before his Korean website. After the news on his hit-and-run was spread, he just made a brief apology in Korea on the following day, which was June 25, simply by using the press release that his agency had distributed, but he still had not personally expressed an apology officially in Korea for three weeks after the accident. On the contrary, his agency had urgently left apology messages on the board of his official website in Japan on the very next day, which was on June 25. There was another posting made by the agency on June 29 to apologize for the accident on the Japanese website.

When the fact that he already apologized personally in Japan became known in Korea, Kwon Sang Woo posted his own written apology on his Internet fan café in Korea on July 21. A spokesperson for his agency explained, “It is the result of a misunderstanding. We just made the press release to the Japanese agency, which was distributed on June 25, so the Japanese agency just posted the notice along with the apology on the website.”

But criticisms were continuously raised on the Internet, such as, “He regards Japanese fans as the ‘source of money,’ and regards Korean fans as the ‘sitting duck,’” and, “Why is he concerned about Japanese fans when he caused the hit-and-run in Korea?”

As Hallyu stars actively perform overseas, they can elevate the status of Korea, which is a positive result. Stars’ activities have actually contributed in large portion to attracting Japanese tourists to Korea. The Korea Tourism Organization produced an advertising commercial with star actor Lee Byung Hun last March. But, as he has concentrated on overseas activities, he is also not free from the criticism that he lacks consideration for Korean fans.

Hallyu stars also have many Korean fans, but their fan meetings held in Korea are usually really events for foreign fans because the fan meetings themselves are mostly held as the part of tour packages, so in actuality Korean fans cannot participate in those events. Actor Lee Byung Hun invited around 1,500 fans from Japan and countries in Southeast Asia and held large-scale fan meeting on Jeju Island from July 9 until July 11. Korean fans were not the target audience, so they naturally felt disappointed about it. In addition, Korean fans rarely have the opportunity to see stars except in dramas, movies, or TV commercials, but stars hold fan meetings in Japan and Southeast countries very often.

Last December, actors Lee Hyung Hun, Song Seung Hun, Won Bin, and Jang Dong Gun held a large fan meeting together in the Tokyo Dome in Japan. It is very difficult to see those four actors together in Korea, but they willingly flew to Tokyo to meet Japanese fans, and their fan meetings were held twice and ended with a flourish to the enthusiastic cheers of around 70,000 fans.

Star singers also tend to focus on overseas activities rather then performances in Korea. The truly pan-Asian star singer Boa performs in Japan for longer periods than Korea. Dong Bang Shin Ki also devoted themselves in activities in Japan after they advanced into the Japanese music industry. Korean fans often buy star singers’ special albums and special photo exhibitions, which they have released overseas, from agencies who buy them from foreign countries and sell in Korea. In addition, fans basically support stars’ overseas activities, but it is easy to find fans’ comments on the stars’ fan café sites expressing their disappointment. As stars advance overseas and become more focused on overseas activities, Koreans fans, who have actually made them stars in the first place, feel more neglect.

A person in the entertainment business said, “Overseas activities usually are so-called money-making opportunities, more so than here in Korea. More than that, to keep their popularity overseas, they have to have more chances to see their fans in foreign countries, so they cannot help focusing on overseas activities.”
