It was recently posted on the Japanese mobile fansite that Taeyeon would be appearing at a special event to help promote “Athena: Goddess of War”, a popular Korean drama that is set to air in Japan on November 30th. Taeyeon is reported to be performing “I Love You”, which is the main theme song for the drama.
“Athena: Goddess of War” is a spin off from the 2009 hit, “Iris”, and the story is about South Korea wanting to unify the Korean Peninsula using their nuclear energy program.
The event will be held at the Saitama Super Arena, and Osaka-Jo Hall, on January 7th and 9th respectively. For each respective day, two shows will be held, one in the early afternoon and one in the evening.
Also appearing at the event are the entire main cast for the drama,  label mates Super Junior, and SHINee.
Apart from Taeyeon, the other artists who participated in the OST album were TVXQ, Kangta and BoA.

SBS’s blockbuster drama ‘Athena: Goddess of War’ just ended its run last night. It was closed with a regrettable number, 13.3% rating. It was quite disappointed since the drama was described as a blockbuster drama with A-list stars, plus big budget production.
The drama began with a 22.8% rating in the first episode which was aired on December 13 of last year and it then decreased gradually which meant it also had to give up the top spot. It was defeated by KBS’s idol-drama ‘Dream High’ which was heated up in the second half of drama.
‘Athena’ will be followed by ‘Midas’ starring Jang Hyuk, Lee Min Jung, and Kim Hee Ae.

An on-set accident for Athena: Goddess of War has sent its lead star, Jung Woo-sung, to the hospital and has producers worried that this week’s episode might not make it out on time.

The accident has been described as a “serious car wreck” that occurred on January 23 during an action shoot. The scene involved actor Jung Chan-woo (playing Athena agent Chul-kyu) being hit by a car while trying to shoot Jung-woo (Jung Woo-sung) in an underground parking lot.
However, the car slipped during the shoot, and both actors were injured while hustling to avoid being hit — Jung Chan-woo injured his head, and Jung Woo-sung his right knee. They were taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Although the situation is still being monitored, it’s being reported that it’s likely Jung Woo-sung will not be able to return to filming right away — or possibly at all — which puts the entire production into emergency mode. The drama was unable to complete its filming for this week’s broadcast of Episode 14, which means that Tuesday’s episode may be postponed while the actors heal. Beyond that is a question mark.

Missing a broadcast due to an accident isn’t exactly common, but it’s been known to happen in extreme circumstances. In 2008, Painter of the Wind delayed a broadcast when Moon Geun-young broke her nose while filming, and in 2009, Gu Hye-sun’s car accident delayed an episode of Boys Before Flowers. In both instances, the dramas whipped up a hasty “special” to broadcast instead.

SBS' series “Athena” came on top of the Monday and Tuesday prime time slot, according to surveys by two media research firms on Wednesday.

Data by Total National Media Statistics (TNmS) and AGB Nielsen Media Research revealed that "Athena," a spin-off to KBS' blockbuster hit series "IRIS," posted average viewership ratings of 18.8 percent and 18.2 percent, respectively, both dropping by one percent compared to a week ago.

"Athena," starring actors Jung Woo-sung, Soo Ae, Cha Seung-won and E Ji-ah, deals with world of spies amid competition to secure nuclear technology among governments.

Coming in second place was MBC's TV series “Queen of Reversals," scoring an average rating of 12.8 percent on TNmS' chart and 15.1 percent on AGB’s poll.

“Queen of Reversals,” starring Kim Nam-joo, Jung Joon-ho and Park Si-hoo, which tells the story of the joys and struggles in the workplace, has shown signs of gaining on front-runner "Athena" since last week.

Meanwhile, KBS' drama “Marry me, Mary,” starring Moon Geun-young, Jang Keun-suk and Kim Jae-wook, finished its run this week at No. 3, with average ratings of 5.9 percent on TNmS' survey while data from AGB revealed slightly higher ratings of 6.3 percent.

"Marry me, Mary," about a girl caught up in a double contractual marriage, ended with a happy ending with Mary (played by Moon) reuniting with Mugyul (played by Jang) after agreeing with Jung-in (played by Kim) that they would not to marry each other for the sake of their fathers.

The musical drama "Dream High," featuring the star-studded cast of actor Kim Soo-hyun, 2PM members Taecyeon and Wooyoung, miss A's Suzy and T-ara member Eunjung, will go on air after "Mary" starting next week.

The poster says it all: black suits, edgy, stern and somewhat mysterious gazes, and guns in hand. “Athena,” the new spinoff of the previous hit drama “Iris” (KBS) is creating a buzz, and viewers can finally check out if all the hype is worthwhile Dec. 13.

While the poster shouts out “stylish action,” the trailer screams out “Iris” with a bit of flash from the 007 series, the intensity of the Bourne series and the love triangle from any other Korean drama.

The cast

“Iris” may have made headlines with its start-studded cast including Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-hee, but “Athena” has its own group of steamy heartthrobs. To start off, Lee has been replaced by the sleek Jung Woo-sung, while Kim switched places with the elegant Su Ae. Additional cast members include actors Cha Seung-won, Lee Ji-ah, Kim Min-jong and Super Junior member Choi Si-won.

Jung Woo-sung is returning to the small screen the first time in 15 years and for female fans, his presence on television will be a delight in itself.

“Because it’s been so long, I wanted to do more and better. As the final airing date comes closer, I am starting to feel the pressure. I feel like I have to go out and do something even on my days off,” Jung said during a press conference for the drama at a hotel in northern Seoul, Tuesday.

“I have been thinking of returning to the small screen to move closer to viewers for quite some time, and so I’ve been thinking about my options when I heard about plans making a spin-off from ‘Iris.’ I was more than happy to jump into the project,” Jung added.

Along with Jung, Cha has also become a favorite among movie and drama makers, thanks to his unique charisma and impeccable acting. Cha plays the bad guy with grand plans, and although he’s known for his ruthless yet stylish characters, he said such a project made him nervous — he’s still learning everyday from the “handsome and gorgeous co-actors.”

As for the ladies, this type of action thriller can never be easy. Thanks to a change of wind in local drama genres, innocent and sweet female characters have transformed into the strong, tough yet gentle kind. Kim So-yeon and Kim Tae-hee have done it through “Iris” and hopefully, Su Ae and Lee will follow suit, bringing something new to the stereotype of typical fragile roles local female actors pursue.

“I have been working out regularly for the past several years, but the action scenes did push me to my limits,” said Lee, who showed off her tough side throughout the preview including martial arts, jumping off buildings and shooting.

“I always wanted to try out the action genre, and I’m so happy that I have finally gotten the chance. It feels cathartic when I see myself on camera, completely different from my previous fragile and sweet roles,” Su Ae added.

And more

The plot is simple: the handsome and talented secret service agent Lee Jeong-woo (Jung) struggles to figure out the truth about his agency, the National anti-Terrorist Service (NTS), a terrorist group called Athena, and his fellow NIS agents and enemies.

In the middle of all this confusion, he gets emotionally attached to the beautiful and mysterious NTS agent Yun Hae-in (Su Ae), arousing the jealousy of yet another agent Han Jae-hee (Lee).

In a nutshell: a handsome agent fights his way to unmask the ultimate truth while struggling to win the heart of the leading lady at the same time.

But the makers of the upcoming spin-off drama explain that it’s much more than the pretty actors and the plot that easily reminds of the original “Iris.”

The drama has been filmed in four different locations abroad, including New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii and Italy, offering a wider spectrum of interesting scenes and backdrops. The preview indeed showed glimpse of the exotic locations, from the ancient streets of Italy to the romantic beaches of Hawaii.

The actions scenes were also impressive, a bit more up-scale than “Iris” and choreographed in a more sophisticated, movie-like touch, like the scene where Son Hyeok, East Asian manager of the United States Department of Homeland Security, fought with a secret agent played by UFC fighter Choo Sung-hoon in the bathroom that reminded one of a similar scene from the 007 film “Casino Royale.”

Another treat for viewers would be the cameos, which range from fellow actors, singers and even sports stars. Choo will appear as the ruthless secret agent, while singer BoA will appear as herself. Actors Lee Bo-young, Jin Gu and Kim So-yeon from “Iris” will also make special appearances to add more star power to the series.

Like the previous series “Iris,” “Athena” has all the right elements to steal the Monday-Tuesday slot, but it takes that extra spark to make it a hit.

Like Kim Min-jong told reporters at the press event, it takes more than stylish action scenes or flashy characters.

“It all comes down to the plot, the drama, the story. I think we have it and I hope viewers will realize that as they watch the show.”

“Athena” starts airing Dec. 13 at 9:55 on SBS.

The spy-action drama “IRIS Season 2 - Athena: Goddess of War,” in which actor Jung Woo sung and actress Soo Ae will appear as the male and female protagonists, will be broadcast from this coming winter in December on SBS. The drama is a spin-off of the original “IRIS” drama and it is based on the original story of the KBS drama “IRIS,“ which had aired last year on KBS. “Athena: Goddess of War” is very similar to the original “IRIS” as the production company Taewon Entertainment, which had produced “IRIS,” will also produce this drama, and it has been equipped with an all-star cast and large-scale action and melodramatic storyline. But the backdrop of the drama has been expanded from the Korean peninsula and Asian countries into the whole world, and the relationships among cast members have become more complicated.

“Athena: Goddess of War” will depict espionage activities of members of the National anti-Terror Service (NTS), the same organization in “IRIS,” fighting against the secret organization named “Athena” concerning the new energy source “TWR.” The drama has become a hot topic as actors who used to appear in movies, such as Jung Woo Sung, Cha Seung Won, and Soo Ae, have been cast as the main protagonists, and it already has begun filming from last June in six different countries including Italy and Japan.

In the preview, which was released in the showcase event held at the Garden stage in Lotte World on August 30, the scenes depicting an explosion and gunfight, which reminded viewers of action movies, filmed in Italy were unveiled to the viewers.

Actor Jung Woo Sung will make a comeback to the small screen after a fifteen-year break since his dramas “1.5” and “Asphalt Man” in 1995. He will play the elite special agent named Lee Jung Woo who will confront the huge shadowy conspiracy. Jung Woo has been transferred from the National Intelligence Service to the NTS, which is the special organization preventing any crisis with international undertakings, as he had been recognized for his excellent strategic performance during his work. At NTS, he meets his former colleague Yoon Hye In (Soo Ae), whom he once loved, and becomes confused after finding out that Hye In had been involved in a secret organization within NTS. In the showcase, Jung Woo Sung said, “In this drama, I have to present both a love story and an action performance. While I had been searching for my next work, I had been informed that this drama was under planning, so I willingly decided to appear in this drama because I thought that it would be a good opportunity to participate in producing a good drama.”

Actor Cha Seung Won will play the heartless character Sohn Hyuk, the head of the branch office of the United States Department of Homeland Security in East Asia, and he also leads the secret organization “Athena,” and confronts Jung Woo Sung in the drama. Cha Seung Won said, “The role that I play is a so-called villain who forms an alignment with a third force to hatch a wicked plot. But as the story of the drama develops, the character will be changed dramatically. This drama is a spy action drama like “IRIS,” but it will contain more various scenes to enjoy watching and it will present a more complicated storyline with various characters. It is not just a simple spy action drama, but a more interesting and exciting spy action drama.”

Actress Soo Ae has shown her pure and graceful beauty so far, will this time transform into a cold-blooded spy. The character whom she will play is a double agent, Yoon Hye In, who belongs to the National anti-Terror Service (NTS) as a profiler and also takes a role within a secret organization as a special agent. She is a character who locks a secret away in her mind. Soo Ae said, “I really enjoyed watching ‘IRIS.’ I had confidence in performing action scenes, and I received the casting request at an appropriate time.”

Actress Lee Ji Ah will play a special agent, Han Jae Hee, who is a colleague of Yoon Hye In. She hides her feelings of love towards Jung Woo, and has to have an inevitable confrontation with Yoon Hye In. Lee explained about the character, whom she will play, by saying, “She is a very rational and thorough person when performing her work, but at the same time, she is very honest in expressing her love.” She added, “I worry, as I heard that my action looked too bloody and spiteful, but actually I had taken much care about performing action scenes not to receive an evaluation saying female actor’s action scenes look too weak.”

Actor Kim Min Jong, who will play a former North Korean intelligence agent coming from a rich labor party named Kim Ki Soo, said, “Kim Ki Soo is a very freewheeling character with manly charms and charisma. There was no indication about a North Korean dialect on the script, but I tried to express the language of a North Korean defector while acting.”

Choi Si Won, a member of the idol group Super Junior, will play a rookie NTS agent named Kim Joon Ho. Choi said, “At first, I was very nervous due to pressure, but as other senior actors are taking care of me as if I am their real nephew, I am filming the drama with no more pressure. Other members of Super Junior are very envious of me about acting together with great senior actors.” He was smiling while making his comments.

In addition, singer BoA and actress Lee Bo Young will appear in “Athena: Goddess of War” as guest stars.

A spokesperson for Taewon Entertainment said, “The story is based on the war on energy, which is not an absurd story, but can happen in the real world. We will attract viewers’ eyes with a solid story line reflecting world policy and a grand scale.”

Singer and actor Kim Min-jong has evaluated Super Junior member Choi Si-won as having much potential as possibility as an actor.

Kim made the remark during a showcase on Monday for upcoming TV series "Athena," the spin-off to last year's hit show "IRIS," in which the two appear alongside a star-studded cast also including Jung Woo-sung, Cha Seung-won, Soo Ae, E Ji-ah and Kim Seung-woo.

"He's doing so well that he's an actor whose future I look forward to more than his present," complimented Kim. "He reminds me of my own past, when I see him doing well at sports and music, as well as having a good determination for acting."

Choi explained, "I think I'll be able to act with my mind at ease and not be nervous because I had been pressured about having to act but everyone has been treating me as if I'm their sibling or nephew....... The members of Super Junior are jealous of me getting to work with them." Choi explained.

"Athena," set to go on air starting November, will be about terrorist acts and threats against the Korean Peninsula and the whole world.

The drama will be shot in various locations throughout the world such as Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and Switzerland.

Jung Woo-sung and Cha Seung-won are co-stars in Athena, the spy drama airing in the fall, but before we get to see how that plays out, we’ll see them paired up in a CF campaign for a smart phone. Two separate ads will be released, with one focusing on each star. (Jung’s illuminates the phone’s functional capabilities, while Cha’s is more about the design.)

Not that I care so much about the ads or the phones themselves, but: hot men in suits! More chances for Jung Woo-sung and Cha Seung-won to look dapper and cool are always a good thing, as far as I’m concerned.

Both stars are brand models for the smart phone, whose CF was shot in Milan. Athena, as you probably know by now, was filming in Italy for the month of July and now shifts locales for more foreign shoots. The drama airs in November.

IRIS spinoff Athena: Goddess of War has gotten a concrete spot on the broadcast schedule, and will be premiering in November. For some reason I had assumed that it would be on KBS, as was the original IRIS, but nope: this sucker’s on SBS, and will be a Monday-Tuesday drama.

To be honest, the promo photos and general aesthetic of Athena are hardly blowing me away here. They’re practically out-cheesing A Man Called God, and that’s a tall order.

The posters have got that exaggerated spy thing going on, like an interpretation of a James Bond flick that doesn’t quite know if it’s homage or parody. I’m really hoping for the latter, because as a straight-up action thriller I am not sold on Athena, not at all; IRIS may have had that blockbuster swagger but I’m not getting that slickness from this drama. (A kidnapped president’s daughter, who’s swept away to the mountains of Italy, spies swooping in to save her, etc.) But as a vehicle for camp? Oh, I’m hoping.

The drama has begun filming, and will
start with first location shoots in Italy this month.
