Shinhwa’s Kim Dongwan has donated 30 million won ($27,994) to help the plight of Comfort Women, Korean women forced into sex-slavery by Japan during WWII.

The producers of KBS’ ‘Love Request’ revealed that Kim Dongwan had recently donated 30 million won to the 58 surviving comfort women in Korea and expressed his hopes that they would receive an apology in their life.

Kim Dongwan has a long history of donating through the ‘Love Request’ starting with helping out the victims of the 2003 Daegu Subway fire disaster. Since then, he’s often donated to helping the needy at home and abroad.

A representative for Liveworks Company shared, “Dongwan has been donating without even telling the label. He shared his donation this time so it would bring the attention of the public of helping the surviving 58 people who suffered as comfort women.”

Shinhwa’s Kim Dongwan participated in the soundtrack for his KBS daily series, ‘Cheer Up, Mister Kim’.

On January 9th, Kim Dongwan released his new single “Only Love”, a heartwarming song that sings of gaining hope and courage from the love of family, perfectly fitting the genre of the series.

In the series, Dongwan takes on the role of Kim Tae Pyeong, who suddenly becomes the guardian of 4 kids each bearing a different surname.

Shinhwa member Lee Minwoo has joined his fellow groupmates Shin Hyesung and Kim Dongwan at Liveworks Company as he prepares to step up his solo activities.

Liveworks Company announced on 12th Nov that they have signed a management agency contract with Lee Minwoo for his solo activities. Fellow Shinhwa members Shin Hyesung and Kim Dongwan are also signed to Liveworks, which was set up in 2009.

Lee Minwoo is not signed exclusively under Liveworks (i.e. he is not a Liveworks artiste), but is instead entering into a management agency agreement with Liveworks. This partnership will see Liveworks managing all of Lee Minwoo’s albums and concerts within and outside of Korea. There are also plans to groom new talents together, with Lee Minwoo overseeing the producing work.

Through this management agency arrangement with Liveworks, Lee Minwoo will step up his individual activities as ‘M’.

Over the years Lee Minwoo has shown himself to be talented in various areas such as songwriting, dance choreography and album production, and fans are curious about how he will continue to capture the hearts of fans with this new contract arrangement in place.

Liveworks CEO Lee Jang Eon said, “Inclusive of Shin Hyesung and Kim Dongwan, we are now undertaking the management agency contracts for 3 Shinhwa members. We will work towards a more stable development of their individual activities, as well as Shinhwa’s overall activities.”

Lee Minwoo set up his own label ‘M Rizing Entertainment’ in 2007, and in addition to taking on the role of CEO, he has been active as an M Rizing artiste.

He is also the co-CEO of Shinhwa Company alongside fellow Shinhwa member Eric. The company was directly funded and set up by the Shinhwa members in 2011 to take care of all group activities.

Meanwhile, Lee Minwoo will be holding his solo concert titled ‘M 이민우 Christmas Live Concert ‘ORIGINAL” at Yonsei University on 23rd and 24th December.

The newly released Korean disaster film “Yeongasi” is the talk of the town, as it attracted more than 1.1 million viewers during its first box office weekend between July 6 and 8, topping even Hollywood blockbuster “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

The success of the film wasn’t always so certain, especially when Kim Dongwan, 33, a member of Shinhwa but an inexperienced actor, joined the cast. Even fellow cast member Kim Myung-min, 40, voiced concerns about his colleague, who he feared might have trouble on the big screen.

But as shooting began, Kim Dongwan worked hard to prove himself, assiduously studying his character to earn the approval of his colleagues, and later, audiences.

In the film, Kim stars as Jae-pil, a detective agonized with guilt for squandering the wealth of his brother Jae-Hyeok, played by Kim Myung-min, through a bad stock recommendation. But in a bizarre twist, a parasite epidemic gives the two a chance to bond. Together, they look for the source of the bug, which drives infected insects to the water so that it can breed, but leads to suicide when humans are infected.

The JoongAng Ilbo sat down with Kim Dong-wan recently to discuss his big break in the movie business as well as his thoughts on the unconventional horror-adventure film into which he put so much effort. The interview also touched on his roles as a TV host and K-pop idol.

Q. Your debut film “Spin Kick”(2004) wasn’t a box-office success. What changed with “Yeongasi”?

A. When filming “Spin Kick,” I only thought about myself. I exercised alone to build my muscles and I read the script alone to practice my lines. I later realized that team-work is of the utmost importance in filming a movie. This time, I’ve learned a lot from the directors and actors, getting along quite well with them.

Q. There must have been a lot of pressure on the set of this new film.

Indeed. Otherwise I wouldn’t have started smoking again. If the film had failed at the box office, I knew I’d be up for criticism. People would have blamed me for the failure, and so I put every effort into my role for this film.

Q. How did you prepare to play an actor with such a broken character?

I visited crime scenes with a detective who graduated from a college of theater and film. He showed me that adjectives like “fashionable” and “cheerful” could actually be applied to detectives, and so even though my character is different, I learned not to stereotype his personality. I also learned from Al Pacino’s detective roles because he is of a slight build - similar to my own.

Q. Do you look back at any particular scene with regret?

The fire scene. Kim Myung-min prepared a lot for the scene, but I was sort of absentminded at that time and ended up having to do the scene again later. I should have prepared more thoroughly for the first take.

Q. In your television show “Shinhwa TV” you play a very different role as a laughing stock of sorts.

On that show we just forget the camera is rolling when we’re playing around with each other. We often have a difficult time watching the edited shows ourselves because of our antics. In the MT episode [aired on June 30], there’s even a scene where we all take turns farting.

Q. How does that show differ from “Infinite Challenge”?

We don’t have a host. We don’t have a leader. So, we do almost anything we want. Choosing to work with JTBC was in line with this goal, too, since we didn’t want to simply mingle with other celebrities. Just being with each other reveals our natural character. Min-woo is the silly one and Eric is the wild-eyed one. I’m the lax one.

Q. Shinhwa is often called the ancestor of idol groups. How do you feel about that title?

We never expected to come this far. At first, we thought we’d be lucky to release a second album. Now I can safely see that we’ve been to the top.

Through all the ups and downs, though, our motivating mantra was “Who cares if we’re on top or not? Let’s just all be happy.” I think that attitude brought us to where we are today.

Now, we’re really a team. I’m only fully myself when I’m with my fellow group members.

One member quickly moves to fill a gap made by another who might be having a bad day. And this happens even before most of us notice.

"These two years I spent meaningfully and quietly. In my spare time I would watch Japanese dramas and listening to Japanese music. Also I went to school to take Japanese language classes. During the release of our 1st album we really enjoyed the local events. When all the members complete their military service in 2012 Shinhwa will definitely reunite again. Eric along with Minwoo are producing music for Shinhwa to stand once again in 2012. I have worked as an actor and also as a solo singer but I have to admit, I feel 100% complete as a solo artist but on stage I was feeling half empty. So I want to stand on a stage as Shinhwa again," he stated.

After finishing up his fan meeting he will be heading to Japan. On December 15th, Dongwan will release his first solo Japanese album titled "Kim Dongwan Japan Premium Best" followed by a fan meeting in December 18th, in Tokyo, Japan.

Dongwan added "After finishing my promotions in Japan, I will come back to work in Korea as an actor, first. I wish to be offered to role of Ji Jin Hee in 'A Man Who Can't Get Married'. Next year in January I will meet you all again via broadcast".
