We all know that ‘Oppa Gangnam Style’ of Psy garnered world’s attention. It even reached more than one billion views in YouTube, the #1 Most Watched Video.

YG Entertainment plans to release Psy’s new song on April. The question is, will it be another ‘Gangnam Style’?
Now, Psy is said to be working on finding another taste of laugh factor to be added on his music video for the song. He wanted it to be far from ‘Gangnam Style’ attack.
“We’ll need feedbacks that my new song is totally different from ‘Gangnam Style’s touch of humour, so we’re currently searching for that fun factor.”, said Psy.

Two great persons are also working for Psy’s new baby, Composer Yoo Gun Hyung, a “Gangnam Style” apprentice, completed the song in Los Angeles with Psy; and Yang Hyun Suk approved for the first version and added two cents for the 2nd and 3rd edits of the song.

April will be the month for our questions to be answered.

A very interesting chart made by FuseTV reveals the deep connection between K-POP artists and US artists. The chart shows the connection of some kpop idols to some international and remarkable US artist. Some of which are Big Bang members who are friends with Ludacris and Flo Rida. The chart shows many more:

Check it below:

This proves that KPOP artists have more to offer than what they have now.

Being a Korean idol is difficult, but being part of a Korean idol group is even harder.
Korean idol groups can no longer be contented with just performing on stage. There's a rising trend with a need for them to branch out in other areas, not only to make a name for their group, but also to let the audience get to know them individually -- especially for those in big groups like Super Junior and ZE:A.
In recent years, Koreans coined the word 'variety-dol' to describe idols well-received on variety programmes because of their personalities, silver tongues or comedic timing.
The first few idols to be crowned 'variety-dols' were probably the members of legendary group Shinhwa, who dominated old-time variety shows such as X-Man where they showed TV audiences another side of themselves. Beast's Yoseob was even quoted as saying, 'Shinhwa members are variety-dols' 'textbooks'.'

Super Junior Eunhyuk

Variety Programmes: Strong Heart, Star King, Running Man
Success rate: ★★★
If Shinhwa had any successors, they would be Super Junior. The group has come a long way since their debut back in 2005 and the first member who actively participated on variety shows is Hee Chul, who is currently serving his mandatory military service.
Last year, after veteran host Kang Ho Dong announced his 'retirement' from the entertainment industry -- due to his involvement in a tax evasion case -- three Super Junior members Lee Teuk, Eun Hyuk and Shin Dong have rose to the occasion and taken a big share of the variety programme market.
We chose to feature Eun Hyuk here amongst the trio because of the innocent and sometimes silly image he portrays on talk shows, easily capturing hearts of fans and audience alike. Furthermore, the idol's strong athletic and dancing skills have also earned him spots in shows such as Let's Go, Dream Team and Running Man.

2AM JoKwon

Variety Programmes: Star King, We Got Married
Success rate: ★★★★★
If you didn't know Jo Kwon any better, you'd think he has split personalities -- one moment he's dancing flamboyantly and the next, singing emotionally on stage with his ballad group 2AM. The Koreans nicknamed the 22-year-old idol group member 'Kkap Kwon', with the Korean word kkap loosely translated to 'talented, but not serious and overly frivolous'.
Jo Kwon makes it into our list as one of the more successful idol group members who breaks into variety programmes because of his versatility to switch personalities and cater to the shows' needs. If you ask us, the idol most definitely did not spend his seven years of training (before his official debut) in vain!

Big Bang Seungri

Variety Programmes: Come to Play, Strong Heart
Success rate: ★★★★
Prior to his scandal, Seungri, the youngest Big Bang member, was making waves not only in Korean variety programmes, but was also featured in Japanese variety shows such as 'Yoshimoto Jounetsu Comedy'.
The reason for his success? His thick-skinned self!
Who could forget that first time Seungri proclaimed himself as 'the star of Gwangju (his hometown)' alongside idol veterans TVXQ's U-Know Yunho and Wonder Girl's Yubin on talk show Come to Play?
The idol's variety skill was later attested again, when he accompanied Big Bang's leader G-Dragon on the first episode of talk show Strong Heart, where he spilled the group's secret and bagged the one-day emcee spot on the programme.

SHINee's Key

Variety Programmes: SHINee's Yunhanam, Idol Maknae Rebellion
Success rate: ★★★★
SHINee debuted in 2008 and was quickly crowned 'Korea's younger brothers' because of their song 'Replay (Noona is so pretty)'. 'Noona' means 'elder sister' in Korean. Out of his four peers, Key is probably the first member in the quintet to show off his individuality.
When SHINee participated in their own reality show SHINee's Yunhanam -- 'Yunhanam' literally refers to the concept of a younger man dating an older woman -- three months after their debut, Key's desire to be the main emcee of the show was evident when he made a mic out of aluminum foil and carried it around.
Following SHINee's participation in various talk shows and variety programmes, Key's overtly direct answers at times, earned him a sharp-tongued image.
But that one special ability the 21-year-old has? The ability to mimic girl groups' dance moves right down to a T. Key was even asked to perform on several occasions!

MBLAQ's Lee Joon

Variety Programmes: Running Man, Hello Baby, Idol Manager
Success rate: ★★★★
MBLAQ's Lee Joon maintains he's not silly and can go on like a broken tape recorder thousand, but we reckon no one will actually believe him.
Known amongst his fans as 'Babo Joon' ('babo' means 'fool' in Korean), Lee Joon's actions, expressions and words on talk shows and variety programmes have further proved that he is ... rather silly. Remember Running Man's Olympic special earlier this year? Lee Joon's jump at the wrong timing caused his team to lose the competition.
Lee Joon once said, 'I believe that as a singer, we must also be funny.'
Silly or not, we say Lee Joon has achieved his aim. After all, we broke out into peals of laughter because of him, did we not?

ZE:A's KwangHee

Variety Programmes: Strong Heart, Happy Together, We Got Married
Success rate: ★★★★★
This is something K-Pop fans would agree unanimously: If not for Kwanghee, we'd still be going 'ZE:A ... who?'
Nine-member K-Pop boyband ZE:A's debut period coincided with that of many rookie bands who were trying to find a place for themselves in the saturated K-Pop industry. And as a large group, it also meant that each member could be easily overlooked.
However, Kwanghee knew the exact solution to this. The idol proved he understood the workings of variety programmes and talk shows, when he shared that he had undergone plastic surgery unabashedly, despite the topic being something most Korean celebrities would vehemently deny.
Kwanghee's bold revelations may border on the line of irritation at times, but how can we dislike someone who willingly digs a pit for himself?

After School Lizzy

Variety Programmes: Running Man, Strong Heart
Success rate: ★★
Not long after After School member Lizzy joined the group in 2010, she guest-starred in an episode of one of Korea's top variety programme Running Man.
After a mere two episodes, the then 18-year-old was invited to be part of the regular cast because of her youth and cheerful personality, which gave her the nickname 'Running Man's vitamin'. However, Lizzy's popularity with the audience was most probably because of the way she speaks, in which her frequent use of the Busan dialect -- Busan being Lizzy's hometown -- earned her the moniker 'satoori ('dialect' in Korean) idol'.
With After School's sub-unit Orange Caramel, which Lizzy is a member of, making a comeback in the Korean music scene, we're pretty sure the idol will be an entertaining watch on various variety programmes!

2NE1's Dara

Variety Programmes: 2NE1 TV, Strong Heart
Success rate: ★★★
Girl group 2NE1 is a rare sight on variety programmes, so when Dara and Bom first went onto talk show Strong Heart, fans were in for a treat.
Dara was pretty nervous when she was sharing her story then, but her confidence quickly grew as time went by. She even admitted that she had taken variety classes from senior Seungri (Big Bang) to prepare herself the night before.
The 28-year-old then told a funny story of how Taeyang (Big Bang) grabbed her neck and twirled her on the ground with a straight face and even added her own sound effects, causing the entire studio of guest stars to cackle along.
On 2NE1's own reality TV 2NE1 TV, Dara may be the group's 'visual', but she sure didn't mind showing her goofy side. With her years of experience in showbiz (Dara was previously a star when she lived in the Philippines), we say, give the girl more chances on variety programmes, she will do a fine job!

SNSD's Sunny

Variety Programmes: Invincible Youth, Hello Baby
Success rate: ★★★
When you're part of Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment, it is almost a given that you will be in the limelight the moment you debut. The toughest part of being part of the nine-member Girls' Generation was then, how to let people know them individually.
Sunny was part of the regular cast of Invincible Youth, where girl group members had the chance to experience countryside life. While on the show, the idol shot to fame when her chicken-catching skills came almost second to none.
Sunny's hard-working attitude at farming and catching fish and her professionalism on the show was probably why she won the hearts of many viewers.

Secret's Sunhwa

Variety Programmes: Invincible Youth, We Got Married
Success rate: ★★
Right before her official debut with Secret back in 2009, Sunhwa was already chosen as a regular cast member on the variety programme Invincible Youth -- this was considered a feat for someone who is barely a rookie.
At that time, audiences were not expecting much from Sunhwa, since they did not know anything about her. However, her active participation in the show caused viewers to change their initial perceptions and Secret gradually gained fame along with Sunhwa's presence in the show.
Recently, Sunhwa, together with ZE:A's Kwanghee, were casted as a couple on reality TV We Got Married, where the bickering pair provided audiences with hours of entertainment despite being just a couple of weeks into their 'married life'.

Ever since an October 2011 New York Times account of an absolutely ridiculous-sounding sold-out K-pop showcase at Madison Square Garden, I’ve been spending altogether too much time chasing the feeling that I got watching my first K-pop video. SHINee’s “RingDingDong.” I’ve been able to get that feeling pretty often. South Korea, see, has figured out pop music pretty much perfectly over the last couple of years. Throughout Asia, and in pockets of the West as well, the music coming out of a few different management companies in Seoul has become absurdly popular, and it’s done it by taking the musical and visual vocabularies of late-’90s American teenpop and amping them up into Blade Runner pleasure-bombs, looking and sounding like an optimist’s idea of the future. The clothes and hairstyles and camera-angles and cheesed-out CGI effects are all cranked up way past 10, and so are the songs’ hooks. If you have any love in your heart for willfully weightless, blissed-out, shame-free pop music, there is a whole lot to love in the 20 videos below.

K-pop is a genre in its relative infancy, really only coming into its own in the last three years and pushing itself to giddier heights every couple of months or so. Though many of the stars do help write their own music, the K-pop assembly line is a very serious thing, one that puts even Nashville’s pop-country industry to shame. These management companies find talented kids, spend years training them, and then debut them in boy- and girl-bands that have all been assembled in the least organic way possible. There’s very little pretense at artistic expression here; instead, these groups are hook-delivery systems polished to a blinding sheen. But that all-surface craftsmanship, in its way, can be just as moving as anything else; it’s humbling to watch people so insanely good at what they do.

I should point out, at the outset, that I am no kind of K-pop historian, and almost everything I learned about the genre comes from clicking the YouTube links that appear after a video ends. That means I’m probably missing a ton of stuff, and actual K-pop aficionados will probably get annoyed with me for ranking some things higher than others and for leaving out classics. I’m a total neophyte, and if I’m leaving out anything important, then by all means set me straight in the comments section. Anyway, this list is less about ranking and more about the sheer abundance of awesomeness that K-pop is giving us right now.

13. Big Bang – “Love Song
The track itself is a better Coldplay song than anything Coldplay themselves have done since A Rush Of Blood To The Head. The video, meanwhile, is one long Children Of Men/Touch Of Evil-style tracking shot (with sly edits, sure) that takes place entirely a post-apocalypic wasteland full of flaming debris and exploding car husks that fall from the sky for no reason. There’s nothing about this thing that I don’t love.

7. GD&TOP – “Knock Out”
Probably the first non-English rap song I’ve ever managed to enjoy. (Second if you consider “Gasolina” a rap song.) G-Dragon and T.O.P. are the two rapping member of BigBang, and their all-rap side project is reliably just awesome. G-Dragon’s also one of the musical masterminds behind his own group, exceedingly rare in K-pop, and if I’m to believe Wikipedia, he started rapping after the first time he heard Wu-Tang. But he sounds nothing whatsoever like Wu-Tang! This song was apparently banned in South Korea because “Knock Out” is Korean slang for being drunk, which is awesome. And the video itself takes place in some Bugs Bunnified alternate universe that reminds me, more than anything else, of a prime-era Missy Elliott video. The part where they dance under the tank turret is the best. Also, this one is probably the most immediately Stereogum-relevant song on the whole list. Diplo produced it, swiping a big chunk from Cajmere’s Chicago house classic “Coffee Pot (It’s Time For The Percolator)” in the process.

4. GD&TOP – “High High”
It took real restraint to keep myself from populating the top five entirely with stuff from the BigBang/2NE1 braintrust, and I just couldn’t help myself here. This one doesn’t have the cartoonish avant-garde force of the “Knock Out” video, but it does poppy American club-rap better than any American has done it in many years. I love the way T.O.P. manages to look like Don Draper even with this goofy spaceman clothes, I love the way way G-Dragon says “like ninja,” and I love that dance they do with their hands on the “high high high high” part. More than anyone, I love how these two guys appear to be having more fun than anyone else on the global pop-music landscape. Also, I hope Slick Rick is making so much money from that sample.

2. Big Bang – “Fantastic Baby”
This one is only a few weeks old, so it seems faintly ridiculous to be putting it so high on a best-of-all-time list. But in K-pop, the groups that last do it by pushing their shit to new extremes every time they’ve got a new single out. And right now, BigBang, a dominant commercial force throughout Asia, are Lady Gaga circa-”Telephone.” I mean, look at this thing. It’s a post-apocalyptic Daft Punk adolescent Tumblr fantasy, and nothing about it makes the tiniest bit of sense, the haircuts especially. I can’t tell you how happy I am that it exists. Amrit will tell you: I kept myself awake enough to write all my SXSW coverage stuff by watching this video every 15 minutes.

As criticism on marketing using K-pop singers targeting teenagers has mounted, North Face scrapped plans to air a TV commercial featuring Big Bang, which signed a contract to promote the company’s spring/summer promotion.

"We will focus on advertisements emphasizing our functional, technical aspects instead of those featuring popular stars," a North Face spokeswoman said.

NOTE: Big Bang is still under contract with North Face and still expected to be modeling for their spring/summer 2012 looks. This just means that there will not be any more commercials for now.

Swizz Beatz paints K-pop's rosy future in world market

Swizz Beatz, a renowned American rapper-producer, said on Monday K-pop is leading a trend for new music and that he wants to play a leading role in introducing Asia to the West through Korean music.

"What I found in Korean pop music is a new expression. The world is open for new things and I think right now K-pop in Korea is leading in that area. I'd like to be the one to introduce that to the West," the musician said during a news conference in Seoul.

The musician, also husband of the famous U.S. singer Alicia Keys, is in Seoul to sign a partnership agreement between his company named after him and O & Media, a South Korean entertainment company.

The agreement calls for the two companies' partnership in helping U.S. pop artists advance to the Asian market and new K-pop artists to the U.S. market, according to the local entertainment agency. The two sides also plan to produce joint albums of leading musicians of both countries, it said.

"My idea to bridge the world together with music starting in Asia and going to the West is something that is new, untapped and leading to the future of bringing the worlds together. And this partnership is the beginning in making a history," Beatz said.

He said K-pop represented by such leading groups and singers as Kara, Big Bang, 2NE1 and Boa has already had many successes in Asia but can appeal to the world with help from the partnership.

Swizz Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, has produced pop albums for top celebrities, including Madonna, Britney Spears, Eminem, U2, Lady Gaga and Jay Z.

The musician is also known for expanding his business to other industries such as film and art.

"I think the more we come together, the more that everybody as a musical voice can be heard because music, whether it's in hard times or good times, is always the No. 1 answer," he stressed.

Many fashionistas may know of ‘Refinery29.com‘, a popular one-stop website for fashion, style, and shopping.

The site posted an article today called ‘Kpop Cheat Sheet: The Bands To Know Before They Blow Up’, and introduced Big Bang, 2NE1, SNSD, and SHINee to their readers. The passage read:

“Okay, we’re calling it, right here, right now. Kpop is going to be 2012′s hottest trend. Straight out of Seoul, these acts are already bringing their edgy, high-end style and infectious tunes all over the world. Asia knows what we’re talking about. Europe is already obsessed. South America goes gaga for these multi-talented superstars. And North America? The craze has already started with the hottest Korean acts selling out Madison Square Garden in NYC, the Staples Center in LA, and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas — just to name a few places. For those of you who haven’t yet become ingrained, we’re here to present to you a little primer to get in on the action. We’re giving you the rundown on four of the hottest Kpop artists that are headed for world domination, the songs you need to hear, and, of course, the styles you’re going to want to copy. Big Bang, 2NE1, Shinee, Girl’s Generation. Memorize these names, people. Let the obsession begin.”

In addition to giving some background information on each group and introducing some of their popular songs, the site also analyzed and broke down the style of each group.

Here is the article:

The Lowdown — Big Bang has been on quite a journey in the five years since their debut. Starting out as a hip-hop group in 2006 (complete with oversized sweatshirts and some unfortunate cornrows), they've since incorporated their heavy beats into much more lyrical, R&B-influenced tunes that showcase all of the five members' distinctive voices while still not losing their urban bite. Members G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung, and Seungri each also have their own successful solo careers, which allow their own unique music styles and aesthetics to shine. But, as good as they are individually, together they are unstoppable — Big Bang recently beat out Brittany Spears for MTV EMA's Best Worldwide Act award, which makes a nice addition to the 60+ awards they've already accumulated. And while they haven't had a concert in the US yet, they've already worked with the likes of Diplo and Ludacris. But, just in case you guys are planning to make your NYC debut any time soon, just know that you're welcome to hold your first concert at 30 Cooper Square, okay?

Their Style — Big Bang are Kpop's ultimate style chameleons — they've literally worn (and rocked) it all. You might see them in preppy sweaters and button-down shirts in a magazine, in sharply tailored suits in a music video, neon skinny jeans and puffer vests on a TV show, and in full leather ensembles and piles of jewelry on stage. They've also graced the pages of countless magazines, including Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and are the faces of everything from The North Face to Calvin Klein in Korea. Big Bang's leader, G-Dragon, in particular is known as one of Korea's leading fashion icons, who is frequently seen in the front row of fashion shows and is maybe one of the best-dressed people to ever go through airport security.

Their Songs

Tonight — A relaxed, melancholic song that has an addictive beat and a dance-y chorus. The video was shot in Las Vegas, making it one of Big Bang's first projects done in America (though we're still waiting for the tour, guys).

Sunset Glow This song is playful and upbeat, like something you'd listen to get you pumped up to go on a road trip. Looks like Big Bang thinks the same, as the video sees them rally their fans for a fun-filled day, which ends in an impromptu sunset concert on top of a bus.

Haru Haru — Although Haru Haru is a somber song that deals with the pain of letting go of someone you love, it's by-far a fan favorite and one of Big Bang's most popular songs, ever. The video portrays them as neighborhood roughs fighting over a girl who (spoiler alert!) kicks it in the end.

GET TO KNOW THE GROUNDBREAKING ACTS OF THE KOREAN WAVE

Koreans used to joke about being the "shrimp among whales" -- stuck between the cultural behemoths of China and Japan.

Over the past decade, however, a massive Korean (Hallyu) wave of pop music exports appears to have subsumed the whales.

Newly crowned MTV Iggy 2011 Best New Band 2NE1 represent this global music phenomenon, despite the fact that it's still relatively unknown in the West. An umbrella term for just about any musical style, hallmarks of K-pop include precision dancing, high production values, a motley array of acronyms for group names, and squeaky-clean all-boy/all-girl groups that feel like throwbacks to the late-'90s Disney NSync/Backstreet Boy factory. Only, somehow...better.

The K-pop wave is about to become a global tsunami, so let's take a quick chronological look back at the decade that brought us to this point. Specifically through the acts that charted the course. The acts that didn't just sell millions of records, they set milestones, paving the way every year for a bigger wave the next.

#10 G..O.D. (1999)

Groove Over Dose (abbreviated lowercase to g.o.d. to avoid confusion with any deity) technically debuted in 1999, but any discussion of the past decade has to begin here. The 5-member male idol group's first single, the earnestly sweet ballad "To Mother," connected little girls, teenage boys, AND their moms together in one giant "aww."

Rapidly releasing an album every year until 2005, g.o.d. preferred substance over flash, angelic singing, and heartfelt lyrics about choosing your own path, childhood sweethearts, and the trials and pleasures of ordinary life. All this in tandem with an adorably goofy charm (best seen in 2000's "Observation") and an elastic ability to swing at any genre thrown at them carried the group to multi-platinum sales. The Hallyu wave had arrived.

#9 BOA (2000 KOREAN DEBUT, 2001 JAPANESE DEBUT, 2009 ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEBUT)

The "Queen of K-pop." BoA (aka Beat of Angel), was the first K-pop artist to break into the insular Japanese market and has since sold over 60 million albums worldwide. She was also one of, if not the, first K-pop artists specifically designed for pan-Asian popularity -- trained to learn Japanese in preparation for her successful Japanese debut, she prefigured the "Gateway to Stardom of Asia" groups like Super Junior.

Although frequently compared to Britney Spears during her heyday (Britney's, not BoA's) for the same can't-stop-watching-her charisma, BoA is frankly a much better dancer. Watch her first English language single, 2008's "Eat You Up" for a glimpse of K-pop royalty.

#8 RAIN (2002)

Time Magazine's 2006 "100 Most Influential People." People Magazine's 2007 "100 Most Beautiful People." A faux rivalry with Stephen Colbert culminating in a dance-off and the satirical comic's K-pop homage, "I'm Singing in Korean." Cast by the Wachowski Brothers in Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin. Winning an MTV Movie award for Ninja Assassin. Rain set new benchmarks in Western exposure for a K-pop star, injected K-pop into mainstream US pop consciousness like no one else before him.

Interestingly, the man whose abs can crush grapes was initially considered too odd-looking for K-pop idolatry. His heavy-lidded "tiger eyes" paved the way for the distinctive features of later K-pop stars like 2NE1.

At this point his other accomplishments threaten to overshadow his music career, but for the uninitiated, one look at "It's Raining" should be enough to convince. Sadly, Rain entered his compulsory military service in the Korean army last month.

(Did you know MTV World, MTV Iggy’s parent division, present Rain to the US audiences on February 3, 2006 with a live taping at the MTV Times Square studios? It was his first appearance in the US.)

#7 EPIK HIGH (2003)

Proof positive that there's more to K-pop besides alluring faces and sexy dances. This hip hop trio (Tablo, Mithra, DJ Tukutz) writes, records, and produces its own tracks -- going so far as to abandon the security of a management company in favor of creating an independent record label. Their 4th album Remapping The Human Soul tackled religion, sexual crimes, and war...and promptly got the band blacklisted (if not outright banned) from most Korean channels.

Rapping in English and Korean, Epik High harkens back to the golden age of '90s backpacker hip hop -- unfussy elegant production, clever lyrics, wordplay, smooth flow, and a socially conscious outlook. Tablo's recent solo album Fever's End hit #1 on US and Canadian iTunes charts soon after its November 2011 release. This is just the beginning. As we discovered in 2009, this eloquent, original, endlessly fascinating rapper always has more to say about the world around him.

#6 TVXQ/DBSK (2003)

Through all time and across all regional boundaries, certain male stars possessed the uncanny ability to foment shrieking, sobbing, mass hysteria in pre-pubescent girls. Just as Justin Beiber inspires devotion among gum-chewing tweeners from Long Island to Nebraska and beyond, the 5 members of TVXQ (known as Dongbangshinki in Korean) are worshipped by the Cassiopeias --the Guinness record setting largest official fan club in the world.

Dubbed "Kings of the Hallyu Wave" by the press, TVXQ surged from one chart-topper to the next as countries succumbed before their tidal charm. Then, tragedy struck. In 2009, 3 members (Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu) filed an injunction against their Korean agency, SM Entertainment, contesting the validity of their contracts. The agency's stock fell 10% when the courts granted the injunction. While the legal battle still rages (12,000 members of the fan club independently sued the agency!) the 3 litigants formed the JYJ and the 2 remaning members, Yunho and Changmin, regrouped as a duo to release the foot-stomping pop gem "Keep Your Head Down" earlier this year.

Whether you choose to follow the drama with a bucket of popcorn or dance blissfully around your bedroom to the music, it's win-win either way with TVXQ.

#5 BIG BANG (2006, COMEBACK 2011)

A slim teenager, short hair scraped into a top knot, runs frantically down narrow labyrinthian alleyways to a pounding percussive rhythm of korean drums and possibly even South Asian tabla. He flattens against a wall to catch his breath. He turns his head. A gun cocks off-screen. "Big Bang" -- the words freeze on-screen to the sound of a gunshot.

(That's just the opening 20 seconds of "Lies," off the group's debut EP Always.)

It doesn't take much to see why Big Bang is so enormously popular among K-pop fans. Combine frontman G-Dragon's brash bad boy style with lead vocalist Taeyang and underground rapper T.O.P. Add two rubber-limbed dancers, Daesung and Seungri. You don't even need to shake it. Since 2006 Big Bang's set trends from dance moves to hairstyles, effortlessly trading hip hop cornrows for preppy-punk faux hawks without losing an ounce of insouciant charm.

The quintet took 2 years off to pursue solo music and acting projects, and returned in 2011 with the EP Tonight, which promptly racked up over $6 million sales in less than a week. They brought their comeback year to a close by nabbing the 2011 MTV Europe Music Award for "Best Worldwide Act." Yes, they're back with a bullet.

#4 WONDER GIRLS (2007)

Sporting retro chic outfits, sing-along harmonies, and an easy, sunny likeability, this five-member all-girl group is a throwback to the golden age of '60s Motown girl groups like the Ronettes or the Crystals. Down to their very own Phil Spector in the form of producer/manager/singer-songwriter Jin-Young Park (aka the JYP of JYP Entertainment).

By 2009, the Wonder Girls bore the heavy expectation of being the first kpop group to properly crossover into the mainstream upon their slender shoulders. Riding the stuttering chorus of "Tell Me" and infectious hand claps of "Nobody," they opened for the Jonas Brothers on the US (not Asian!) leg of a world tour and even received powerhouse gossip blogger Perez Hilton's sweaty stamp of approval.

Unfortunately, it was all a little too soon. Mainstream America ignored them, and the K-pop world backlash when they didn't make it was crushing and not a little mean.

In late 2011, the Wonder Girls returned with a lineup change and a teaser video for theWonder World album showcasing a grittier new look and a bass-heavy, distorted synth sound. Thankfully, the teaser was a bit deceptive. Songs like "Be My Baby" may show the girls in black and white and all grown up, but the finger-snap melodies remain.

#3 GIRLS GENERATION/SNSD (2007)

Apparently 2007 was a banner year for girl groups since it spawned both the Wonder Girls and Girls Generation. While the former is significant for leading the overground Hallyu vanguard, the latter (known as So Nyeo Shi Dae in Korean, abbreviated to SNSD) created a new business template for K-pop groups to come by saturating all media.

Boasting nine squeaky clean members in varying shades of adorable, Girl's Generation was introduced to the K-pop world into a series of carefully plotted and well-timed moves: a documentary on the girls' pre-debut creation, singles that the girls rehearsed in the documentary, spin-off projects, reality shows, acting gigs, photobooks, philanthropy...this hydra-headed idol group is inescapable, least of all on music charts where they perch at #1 with every new track.

Just how big is SNSD? They recently signed to Interscope Records, and Michael Jackson's legendary producer Teddy Riley wrote, composed, and arranged their latest single "The Boys." At this rate, expect to see their twinkling faces on cereal boxes by 2012.

AND NOTHING FOR YOU 2008!

#2 2NE1 (2009)

Rocking outlandish wigs and a brash attitude in songs like "I Am the Best" and "Ugly," 2NE1 revolutionized the image of female idols, and by 2011 rode atop the Hallyu wave all the way to the title of MTV Iggy's Best New Band in World. CL, Minzy, Bom, and Dara are known as the fiercest ladies of K-pop for a reason. And we've been counting those reasons for so long, explanations seem superfluous at this point. Dive into an article on 2NE1, watch their electrifying music videos, and meet their superfans.

No matter what you do, one fact is inescapable: 2NE1 is the promise of K-pop crossover made flesh, the tsunami about to shatter the pop culture landscape as we know it.

#1 MISS A (2010)

While 2NE1 fans would happily closeout the decade at 2009, one last group squeezed into this list. miss A, another fearsome foursome, slammed K-pop fans upside the head with the aggressively tough (and titillating, if we're being honest) "Bad Girl Good Girl" debut track. They may not be as out-there creative as 2NE1 with their softer, more melodious sound, but miss A won comparisons to older and more experienced groups right off the bat. Half Chinese (Fei and Jia) and half Korean (Min and Suzy), miss A already established a beachhead in the Chinese market, and with songs like "Breathe" and "Good Bye Baby" showcasing the girls' range, they've got the potential to follow 2NE1's global appeal.

LONDON (Reuters) - A host of young Korean stars are taking to the stage in London, New York and beyond in a bid to crack one of the final global frontiers for Asian culture -- pop music.

"K-pop," as Korean pop is called, has made major inroads into Japan, the world's second largest music market.

But breaking into key countries further afield like Britain, Germany, France and, most crucially, the United States, has so far eluded acts who may be household names at home but remain virtual unknowns outside Asia.

Korean bands are not the only ones trying to be the next Britney Spears, Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber.

Japanese artists, some of them "J-pop" superstars, have also looked overseas for new audiences, although the size of their own market, only just behind the United States in the world rankings, means they have less incentive.

"It is a pain for a lot of these Japanese bands to make the effort to try and penetrate overseas markets," said Steve McClure, executive editor of McClure's Asia Music News and an authority on the region's music scene.

"Time spent doing that is time not spent here and it's a really fast-paced market and you have to work at it," he told Reuters, speaking from Japan.

Foreign music accounts for around a quarter of Japanese record sales, and the top 10 albums on record are all by local artists. Hikaru Utada holds the record with "First Love" from 1999, while Mariah Carey is the biggest international artist.

K-POP VS. J-POP

McClure, like many others, believes that K-pop stands a better chance at success globally than J-pop, although even that is far from certain.

The structure of Korea's relatively small music market is such that telecom companies control a large proportion of revenues, he said, meaning bands have an economic incentive to look abroad.

And K-pop acts, often created and nurtured by savvy record companies like S.M. Entertainment, are being groomed for specific markets -- learning Japanese, for example, and fitting in with Japan's musical mores.

One recent success story has been the nine-member South Korean girl band Girls' Generation, whose first full-length Japanese album sold over 500,000 copies in Japan.

McClure also argued that Korean pop acts, though often manufactured, were generally more professional than their Japanese rivals and produced a better sound.

The most obvious, and biggest barrier to Asian acts breaking regions like Europe and North America is language.

Since music is about communicating ideas and feelings, common language helps. And the prevalence of English makes it easier for a singer from Toronto, for example, than one from Tokyo.

"The language barrier is probably the biggest thing that sets us apart from the global (arena)," said G.NA, a 24-year-old Canadian-Korean singer whose first language is English but who has found success in Korea.

She, along with two other K-pop acts, will be appearing at London's 02 Academy Brixton on December 5 as part of what the PR company handling the gig called "The Invasion of K-Pop."

It follows a K-pop concert at New York's Madison Square Garden in October. Those and other similar gigs outside Asia underline the ambition of K-pop acts and management companies to conquer the West and beyond.

It may be less invasion and more a small-scale foray, but promoters say there are encouraging signs for K-pop.

"We can't spend too much money if there is no market for us," said Ronnie Yang, head of CABA Entertainment who is organizing the London gig featuring artists from Cube Entertainment.

"But we feel this is the right stage for developing a new market -- there is demand and it is higher than before."

G.NA, for one, is not getting lost in the hype. Chance, she says, is as important as anything else.

"This industry is kind of like gambling," she told Reuters by telephone from Seoul. "You lose something, and you may lose everything. You may win and win more than expected. I think there's a lot of luck.

"It does depend on how much we try, but no matter how hard we try, if the circumstances don't work out, then things may not work out the way we planned. This concert is huge -- if people don't like it that could be the end of that."

"GENRE-SPECIFIC"

The wide pop genre may be the hardest market to crack abroad, but there has been success in the United States and elsewhere within narrower categories of music like classical, dance, rock and heavy metal.

Japanese heavy metal band X Japan staged a North American tour in 2010 catching the attention of major news outlets, and have visited Europe, Latin America and Asia this year.

L'Arc-en-Ciel, a Japanese rock group, has flirted with the United States and Europe, and plans a 2012 world tour.

The event is limited in scale so far, however, with seven dates showing on the website including indigO2 in London with a capacity of around 2,500.

The band's guitarist Ken alluded to a cultural barrier which has proven tough to break down.

"In Japan I am always listening to music from the U.S. and the UK," he told Reuters by telephone, speaking through a translator.

"But I never really got the impression people in the UK were listening to music from other parts of the world. So I'm really looking forward to getting a sense of how those people in Britain will perceive our music."

McClure added: "Music is meant to be the universal language...well, yes and no.

"There does seem to be this inability to accept an Asian face in the world pop music market place. I don't know why that is, as there are Asians who have done well in other spheres."
