Well, when you’re a cable drama and you’re breaking 8% ratings (I know, wow), it comes as no surprise that the station extends your run.

Scriptwriter Kim Soo-hyun is continuing her hot streak with Childless Good Fortune, the weekend family drama on JTBC that’s currently two-thirds of the way through its run (its last broadcast was Episode 19). Originally planned for 30 episodes, now the show will be getting 8 to 10 more; the number hasn’t been decided yet but the extension itself is confirmed. Writer Kim, the production company, and the scheduling team at JTBC are reportedly currently ironing out those details.

A manager from JTBC’s scheduling team stated that the extension won’t greatly change the direction of the story, but will mainly draw out the small moments and funny episodes. “There will be no forced extension or last-minute scripts,” she added.

The drama has had a remarkable ratings record, with each episode climbing ever higher. The recent December 30 broadcast netted an unheard-of 8.1% for the episode overall, and on the live ratings meter its highest point hit 10.5%. That’s pretty amazing, considering that half that would still be considered amazing. And half that (that is to say, 2%) would still be a solid number—not quite the hit sensation that we would’ve thought it a year ago, but safe and strong.

The 8.1% rating is also a new record for cable dramas, and we’re only halfway through! How high can cable go? Only JTBC knows, it seems.

It’s been reported several times that Lee Min Ho and Park Min Young were really close, often practicing their lines together and joking with each other when the cameras were off. Their perfect on-screen chemistry probably stems from their close off-screen relationship with each other.

The yellow sweat gear was known as “Jung Il Woo’s style” recently. On April 7th, as 8th episode’s Lee Kyung (Lee Yo Won) and possessed Ji Hyun (Nam Kyu Ree) were shooting a scene where they talk to one another at the school’s playground, Jung Il Woo wore a yellow sweatsuit with black stripes and sneakers with wings, making his style very unique.

Hyun Bin first set the trend in becoming popular on drama by wearing sweatpants on SBS’ “Secret Garden” (Writer: Kim Eun Sook /Director: Shin Woo Chul, Kwon Hyuk Chan) at the beginning of this year.

He popularized himself by wearing shiny blue sweatpants on his soap opera “Italian craftsman put his heart into every stitch" phrase. Because of this, in the entertainment world, the popularity of sweatpants is rising, and many stars are wearing the same kinds of attire.

On KBS2TV’s new drama “President” which was broadcasted on the 15th, Super Junior’s Sungmin challenged his acting skills for the first time. When Sungmin clenched his fist, it drew much curiosity from the people.

In “President”, Sungmin is acting as the son of Jang Il Jong (played by Choi Su Jong), who joins the election campaigns in hopes of becoming the President.

In the first episode, Sungmin prepares a party for his parents’ silver wedding anniversary* and supports his father in running for elections, showing an example of a “model child”.

However, on the upcoming second episode on the 16th, the situation would not be the same. Sungmin, who wants to show his capability as the eldest child, carries out invesitigations on the opponents, in order to use the information against them. This resulted in the refusal by his father, who is against children interfering in the elections.

Sungmin later told his mother: “Father does not listen to my suggestions. I must get approval using my skills”, and showed his determination.”

The producers evaluated Sungmin: “Although this is Sungmin’s first time acting in a drama, he is able to understand his role and the script very fast. He displays an extraordinary passion when approaching his acting seniors for advice in acting.”

With the success of the drama My Princess these days, MBC Productions has hastened to adapt the story for another format with a novelization.

The novel features a plot that, like the drama, focuses on the development of love amidst the quarreling and clashes of its two leads. However, it purports to differ substantially in its more detailed exploration of the characters’ inner thoughts and struggles.

Still, the book’s probably not too far from the tone of the drama, as scriptwriter Jang Young-shil worked with the novel writer Sohn Hyun-kyung in the adaptation process. The two had also worked together in novelizing Jang’s previous drama, Lovers In Prague. The book also comes with color photos of the leads, for fans out there who love collectibles.

Dream High, which is the current leader in the Monday-Tuesday ratings race, is considering extending its run by one episode, according to a rep with the drama’s production team on January 26.

This is no surprise, since the drama was pre-empted this week to make room for the Korea-Japan soccer game in the 2011 Asia Cup. That puts the broadcasting schedule off by one episode, pushing back its scheduled finale episode (the 16th) one more week to a Monday. To even out the airing schedule and to keep the following drama from starting off askew, KBS is in talks to bring the total to 17 episodes, which would put the finale on Tuesday, March 1.

In fact, KBS has put in a request with producers for a larger extension as well. With Dream High bringing KBS back to #1 in the Monday-Tuesday timeslot after being last-place for a while (Mary Stayed Out All Night, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child), the broadcaster seems happy to give the drama a longer run.

However, an additional extension is looking unlikely at the moment, because casting a large number of idol stars means that the shooting schedule is under especially tight constraints. Often, idol actors are juggling crammed schedules as they balance drama shoots with pop-star duties, and therefore their post-drama schedules are already filled.
