Jun Jin said, “I think it is a quite serious situation” and Eric without any hesitation got up from the set and rushed to the bathroom. Later, Eric explained, “Before coming to the recording, I drink a lot of water to relax.”

At a time where increasingly many idol singers are turning to acting, let’s take a look at some of those who have juggled their acting careers alongside their singing day jobs.

Recently, the hot topic in showbiz is how idol singers are taking on the challenge of acting. Among the recent crop of dramas, trying to find a drama that doesn’t feature a singer-turned-actor is like trying to pluck a star from the sky. Im Shi Wan in ‘The Moon That Embraces The Sun’, Jung Eun Ji and Seo In Gook in ‘Answer Me 1997′, have all received good reviews for their performances and have successfully established themselves as ‘acting-dols’.

At a time when it’s difficult to leave an impression just by singing, who are the singers who have taken up acting in the past and then going on to straddle both fields?

# The Nation’s Fairy, S.E.S Eugene

# Fin.K.L’s maknae, Sung Yuri

# No.1 popularity in g.o.d, Yoon Kye Sang

# Shinhwa’s Eric, isn’t there a burning smell somewhere?

In 1998, H.O.T’s management company SM Entertainment unveiled a 6-member idol group Shinhwa in grand fashion. 14 years later in 2012, the group has stood firm by their name and has gone on to become the longest-running idol group in Korea. At some point, Shinhwa member Eric took a step to stand in front of the public as Mun Jung Hyuk.

After his debut drama ‘Breathless’, he went on to romance the late Lee Eun Joo in MBC’s ‘Phoenix’, where his line ‘do you smell something burning’, became a popular phrase. Word has it that his fellow Shinhwa members, who were monitoring him in the drama, were cringing upon seeing him onscreen.

For Eric, the public’s criticisms targeted at his acting skills didn’t last very long. After taking home a Top Excellence award at the MBC Drama Awards for his performance in ‘Super Rookie’, Eric went on to establish himself as a bona fide actor with his roles in ‘Super Rookie Ranger’ (aka Korea Secret Agency / Invincible Parachute Agent) and ‘Que Sera Sera’. He further ventured onto the big screen with his turn in the movie ‘Diary of June’ (aka Bystanders).

However, his next drama ‘Strongest Chil Woo’ suffered from low ratings, and he suffered more humiliation when his post-army comeback drama ‘Spy Myungwol’, was plagued by controversies arising from the Han Ye Seul incident and his Twitter comments. Low ratings aside, for someone who had won acting awards such as Best Newcomer and Top Excellence in Acting, his acting skills once again came under fire from the general public.

Comedian Jang Dong-hyuk (he’s the guy who’s been MCing a few eps of Shinhwa Broadcast, eg the Olympics Channel and the School Channel) has revealed that Shinhwa member Eric is a fan of girl group T-ara.

Jang Dong-hyuk was the MC for T-ara’s commemorative fanmeeting for the inauguration of their official fanclub QUEEN’S held on 14 July, where he said, “I uploaded a photo that I took with T-ara in the waiting room on my Facebook page and Eric left a message telling me to tell Jiyeon that he’s a fan of hers.”

To that, Jiyeon replied, “Uncle Eric, please show lots of love to T-ara, and keep watching out for and support our activities. Thank you.”

Jang Dong-hyuk then tried to prompt Jiyeon to say one of Eric’s famous lines from the drama ‘Phoenix’, “Eric-oppa, because of you my heart is burning”, but Jiyeon deflected the request and in a show of love for her fans, said that she had to get permission from QUEEN’S before she could do that.

Shinhwa leader Eric is experiencing a great deal of stress these days. A variety show went ahead to release news of his participation to the press when the final decision had yet to be made, and as such Eric is now having a rough time because of this.

On the morning of 9 July, a newspaper article reported that Eric had agreed to participate in the Madagascar edition of SBS variety show ‘Law of the Jungle 2′.

Once the article was published, the media scrambled to report on this as well. But at that point in time, Eric had not confirmed his participation in the show and was due to meet the production team that very afternoon for final discussions.

In fact, Eric was in a meeting with the producers until the early hours of the morning to try to come to a consensus, but in the end he had to decline.

When news got out that Eric will not be appearing on the show after all, most netizens were understanding about Eric’s decision and expressed their disappointment.

But there were also criticisms coming from some netizens as well, “Why did he decide to go and then change his mind not to go now”, “Is he using scheduling conflicts as an excuse so that he can take part in other activities”. In particular, some netizens even posted some quotes from the production team, which were almost personal attacks.

Eric had expressed that he had been very positive about joining ‘Law of the Jungle’. But apparently as he had prior schedule commitments such as jTBC’s ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’ and commercials, if he were to join the show, there would be pressure on everyone else to have to change their schedules, and he didn’t want that.

Even if Eric took up the show, he also wouldn’t have been able to set off together with Kim Byung-man and the rest of the cast, and could only join them later. As such, overall plans for the show could be affected and after considering in detail, he decided to turn down the opportunity.

Eric himself is most disappointed about not being able to participate in the programme. Although ‘Law of the Jungle’ is a popular show that anyone would have wanted to join, Eric chose to honor his prior obligations instead of going with his personal interests. There’s no reason to fault him for that.

In particular, casting negotiations were leaked to the media when it should have been handled confidentially. Instead of criticizing Eric who racked his brains before arriving at a decision, shouldn’t we be applauding him for honoring his promises?

Singer/actor Eric will not be joining SBS variety show ‘Law of the Jungle 2′ after all.

According to a rep from Shinhwa Company, “In the midst of Shinhwa’s Asia tour, we received a proposal for Eric to join ‘Law of the Jungle 2′. After sharing views and going through the schedule with the producers, we mulled over this but after considering possible obstacles such as the filming schedule for Shinhwa Broadcast, commercials and other unavoidable circumstances, we decided against it.”

“Eric, who was unable to conceal his excitement at the possibility of joining the ‘Byung-man Tribe’, is the most disappointed about this. Eric is very grateful and sorry to SBS for giving him the opportunity to join the most popular program right now, and though he’s unable to participate due to scheduling conflicts, if the opportunity comes along, he would like to join the ‘Byung-man Tribe’ to form the great dream team.”

Eric has just ended Shinhwa’s Asia tour and comeback activities on 7 July. At the moment, he is now considering various drama and film proposals, and also taking a well-deserved rest.

Top Class Entertainment told Joynews24 on the morning of 9 July, “It’s true that he’s currently considering joining the show but nothing has been firmed up yet.”

Eric is reportedly considering to join the Madagascar edition of SBS variety show ‘Law of the Jungle 2′. The rep added, “We’ll be meeting the producers again today. We will make a decision after careful consideration, because ‘Law of the Jungle 2′ requires commitment over an extended period of time.”

The producer of the show Lee Ji-won told Newsen, “It’s true that we’re still in discussions with Eric about him joining the show but nothing has been confirmed yet. He will probably make a final decision by tomorrow after we meet him this afternoon.”

With their 10th album comeback coming to an end, Shinhwa members expressed their gratitude to their leader and Shinhwa Company CEO Eric.

At the press conference held on 6 July in Beijing, the members said, “It seems right to say a big thank you to Eric. We want to leave next year’s comeback in his good hands too. He fills the role of Shinhwa’s leader the best.”

As the producer for this album, Minwoo had the most number of clashes with Eric. “This round of activities gave me the opportunity to talk a lot to Eric. We didn’t have any serious arguments but there were some clashes of opinion when it came to the music style, direction and issues related to stage performances. At that time Eric told me ‘I fully understand your frustrations but looking at the overall picture I have to take a neutral stand and I don’t have a choice but to speak coldly’”

Dongwan added, “I think what Eric meant was that he was trying to speak more objectively to Minwoo. Just looking at the two of them from the sidelines, they really talked a lot about the music concept. After that I found out that though Eric put his views across very bluntly and objectively, Minwoo didn’t take it personally and they were able to produce a good album after a good discussion. I hope for next year too, Eric will be able to speak objectively without being led by his emotions.”

Minwoo said, “When juniors ask us ‘how can we become a long-running group like you’, we tell them that the members shouldn’t close their hearts to one another, to share their thoughts and solve problems with one another. For us, Eric’s role as our team leader has been instrumental in us being able to reach this point today. Even for the comeback this time, Eric has put in the most effort. I think the team leader’s role is the most important. We’ll leave next year’s comeback in your good hands, Eric ah.”

Shinhwa commenced their comeback activities after 4 years on 5 March with their comeback press conference, following up with the release of their 10th album, their comeback concert in Seoul, an Asia tour and TV appearances including their regular show on jTBC, ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’.

In particular, their Asia tour has covered 5 countries, where they performed to an estimated total of 91,000 fans over 8 cities and 10 performances, a clear indication that Shinhwa is still going on strong as ever.

On the upcoming 30th June episode of jTBC’s Shinhwa Broadcast, the rookie manager for Shinhwa leader Eric shares his grievances and unhappiness in the 3rd part of the ‘God of MT’ special.

During the recording of the episode, the Shinhwa members played a game of dodgeball against their managers, with the prize being a sumptuous dinner menu of Chuncheon specialities like dakgalbi and buckwheat noodles.

Before the game however, the managers aired their grievances about the members, resulting in a tense psychological battle between the two teams. In particular, Eric’s usually meek and quiet rookie manager (Kim Bogeun) also shared his unhappiness with Eric, surprising the members in the process.

He poured out his grievances about the blunt and curt ways of Eric, who was embarrassed and unable to defend himself. The other members took the opportunity to reproach Eric, passing remarks like “that’s really mean”, “how could you do that?”

This episode will be aired on 30 June at 10.55pm (KST).

During the latest recording for the Kids Channel episode for jTBC’s ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’, a poll was done among 12 kids aged from 4 to 8 years old to find the Shinhwa member most popular among kids.

The children, who have no idea at all about who Shinhwa is, were asked to pick the Shinhwa member whom they had the best first impression of. Member Eric was surprisingly assessed as the ‘ugly uncle’ and only managed to pick up just one vote, becoming the lowest-ranked member in the poll.

On the other hand, Junjin was very well-received by the children in all the segments, causing jealousy among the other members who complained, “We don’t understand why Junjin is so popular”.

The ‘Kids Channel’ special – featuring the Moon brothers (Mason, Mavin, Maden) – will be aired on 28 April at 9.55pm KST.
