The popular MBC drama “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” ended its run on March 15 with its highest viewer ratings.

According to AGB Nielsen on March 16, the program had ratings of 42.2 percent nationwide, while the average was a bit higher in metropolitan areas at 45.8 percent.

In the drama’s gripping final episode, Yang Myun and Bo Kyung meet their fate while the protagonists King Lee Hwon and Shaman Wol are united at last.

The drama, which features actor of the moment Kim Soo Hyun and the pretty actress Han Ga In, began airing in January and has had ratings of 18 percent since its first episode. Starting with the third episode, the program has had ratings of 25 percent, putting the program in first place against competing dramas in the same time-slot.

The final two episodes of the 20-part series were to air last week on March 7 to 8, but had to be put off for a week because of a strike that involved MBC and other major networks.

The rights to the drama have been purchased by seven networks in the Asian region, making it one of the most profitable exports in the drama genre to date.

The era of “The Moon that Embraces the Sun,” which had given KBS and SBS dark/ominous times, is slowly fading away.
On March 14th, MBC’s 20 episode Wed-Thurs drama, “The Moon that Embraces the Sun,” finally reached its end.
Because of the recent circumstances (MBC’s success), SBS’s Wed-Thurs drama “Rooftop Prince’s” PR department is promoting “Rooftop Prince” more than ever [to try to combat MBC]. Because of the main actors, JYJ’s Park Yoochun and actress Han Ji Min, there is already hot anticipation from fans. Word of mouth from the network is that the script is good and because the Joseon King’s fantasty-romance piece is similar to “The Moon that Embraces the Sun,” the plan/hope is that viewers of “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” would transfer their attention to “Rooftop Prince.”
Participating alongside “Rooftop Prince” is MBC’s drama “King 2 Hearts,” which, because of the lineup of “invincible” actress Ha Ji Won, will be slightly tough for “Rooftop Prince” (to receive top viewer ratings). However, because there is such high appraisal of the script for “Rooftop Prince,” there are high expectations from within the network. Because “Rooftop Prince” is similar to “The Moon that Embraces the Sun,” it’s forecasted that it will not be “trampled over” by “King 2 Hearts.”
SBS’s “Rooftop Prince” and MBC’s “King 2 Hearts” will both air their first episodes on March 21st.

Midweek MBC drama “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” will not air this week following a strike by the program’s director, Kim Do Hoon. Earlier in the day, the network said it was unsure whether the program would continue to air, but later made the final announcement.

“We filmed up until March 5, but recording for March 6 was cancelled. Episode 19, slated to air on March 7, is yet incomplete, and for now, airing seems impossible,” the network representative said. Instead of the 19th and 20th episodes, MBC will air a special-edition show based on the drama.

Union members of three of the nation’s leading broadcasters – KBS, MBC and YTN – went on strike on March 5 to protest what they saw as politically biased reporting.

Due to various program directors taking part in the union strike, other MBC dramas, such as “Feast of the Gods,” “A Military Subject” and “Just like Today,” are also at risk of being cancelled this week.
