Actor Choi Daniel has replaced Kim Moo Yul, who has been asked to leave his role due to controversy, for the lead role in the movie “AM11:00.”

The announcement came on July 10, just hours ahead of the film’s good luck celebrations attended by cast and crew.

“Filming was to begin in less than a week; Kim Moo Yul’s dismissal was therefore a big deal as they needed someone to replace him as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson from the movie.

Apparently, the movie people had a lot of convincing to do before Choi decided to get on board the project. Choi’s ties to the director Kim Hyun-seok are thought to be a crucial factor in the actor sealing the deal.

The two worked together on Cyrano Agency back in 2010 -- the film was a stepping stone into the spotlight for Choi.

AM11:00 is a sci-fi thriller about a situation that unfolds in the lives of researchers when a time machine malfunctions.

Actor Kim Moo Yul has been asked to leave his leading role in the movie “AM 11:00” as controversy grows over his exemption from mandatory military service.

“Up until a few days ago, Kim was at costume fittings as well as script readings. He wanted to see the project through,” a spokesperson for the movie’s producers said. “But at the advice of the production company, he decided to call it quits.”

Though the Military Manpower Association did grant a valid exemption in 2010, according to the Board of Audit and Inspection, it has launched a reinvestigation into the case given the publicity.

In 2010, Kim told the conscription agency that he had a minor illness, but when he failed to receive a medical exemption, he filed another request stating that he was the sole financial provider for his family. That request was eventually granted.

And from 2007 to 2009, Kim told the Military Manpower Administration that he sat for the civil service examination more than five times, which can postpone conscription.

Kim Moo Yul worked as a security guard, construction worker and at a mobile phone factory to earn bread for his family, according to his agent yesterday. The agent came to the defense of the 30-year-old actor under growing public criticism over allegations he dodged his compulsory military service.

Yeo Jun-yeong, the head of agency Prain TPC, said that Kim’s family was not merely poor but that it was “nearly impossible” for them to make a living since Kim was in his late teens.

“At the time of his enrolling at Sungkyunkwan University in 2002, his family’s [financial] condition was so bad that he was almost unable to continue his studies,” Yeo said in a blog. “He considered joining a special military force after he heard that he could make 30 million won [$25,884] by doing that, but he put off going to the military after his father collapsed due to a cerebral hemorrhage and he began taking care of all of his family members.” Kim rose to stardom after the release of the film “Eungyo” (2012).

Actor Kim Moo Yul has landed himself in hot water as his past of dodging military service has surfaced.

On June 21, the Korean Board of Audit and Inspection released a report which stated that the 30-year old actor was exempted from military service back in 2001 due to being a “low-income individual.”

According to the report, in 2001 Kim was given “rating two” at the physical examination, which meant that he was fit to be conscripted.

However, from 2007 to 2009, Kim reported more than five times that he had been sitting for civil servant examinations, which excused him for the time being.

Then in 2010, Kim filed a report to the Military Manpower Association, saying that he had a minor illness. When the medical report failed to exempt him from mandatory military service, Kim again filed for exemption, stating that he was the sole provider for his family.
This time the exemption was granted as it was implied that without Kim, the family would be in ruins.

Meanwhile, Kim has starred in various dramas and musicals since 2007 and has pocketed more than 300 million won ($260,300).

Netizens were in a furor when the news broke, citing that it is unfair that so many celebrities are given exemption on groundless evidence.

Kim’s agency has since come out and countered that Kim was in truth supporting his family, as his father was diagnosed with cancer in 2008.
