"Friends in Song
Two of a Kind"

The first appearance of the 6-membered idol group 2PM in Vogue Japan was in the August 2011 issue.

The photoshoot was done in June in Tokyo. While most international celebrities halted their activities in Japan after the earthquake, the members of the group had visited Japan again quite earlier than expected.

At a rooftop studio located in Minami Aoyama, Tokyo, they are riling up good responses from the readers as they immersed themselves and posed with the concept of "flying into the sky."

Approximately 2 years have passed, and big changes have taken place, be it in Japan, Asia, or even the world. And at the same time, the members have also grown more matured.
They received Golden status by the Record Industry Association of Japan for their 5th single "Masquerade" almost immediately after it was released last year in November, and now they're in the middle of a nationwide Arena Tour, which started on the 11th of January.
Moreover, they will also be having their first ever concert in Tokyo Dome on the 20th and 21st of April, titled "LEGEND OF 2PM in TOKYO DOME."
They've also made themselves quite known throughout the nation with their fixed program, "NHK One Point Hangul."

2PM Taecyeon and Nichkhun are members who actually grew up in the States. They came to Korea at the age of 18, and now both of them are the next generation's successful Asian stars who've received endless love and support from fans in Korea, Japan, China and all of Southeast Asia by the age of 24.
These two who had led a normal teenage life in the States have now grown into a very active and well-known stars in the Asian entertainment market. I wonder, what do they think of this unexpected situation?
The concept of the photoshoot for this time is about capturing how these two spend their relaxation time backstage, at ease before a performance. And no doubt with this very relaxed atmosphere, we were able to be exposed to their true selves.

---I heard your new album ('LEGEND OF 2PM', which will be released on February 13th) will be released soon.
TY: I have a good feeling about it. And the songs also reflect our thoughts and opinions.
NK: Solo songs composed by each of the members are also included in the album.

---Even self-composed songs?
NK: It'll be my first time for this album. I wanted to thank my fellow fans who've been supporting me and loving me without a fail, so I thought, "Isn't there anything I can do to repay them?" I was quite worried about it, when suddenly the title "Let It Rain" popped up in my mind. I immediately sat in front of the piano after that. And so, this song just came out quite naturally.
TY: As for my composed song, I put in the beats first, and then from there, the chorus part is created. I don't put in too much thought or sit still in front of the piano or anything like that. (Laughs) I also write the lyrics by myself~.
NK: Firstly, I wrote the lyrics in English. Because I think my true feelings are expressed the best in English, in the hope that the same meaning will get to each and every one of our fans. Do look forward to each of our solo songs at the Arena Tour.

"From the States to South Korea~ Testing out the possibilities."

---Your first encounter?
NK: I was scouted when I was in the States, and then I moved to South Korea for the first time. At that time, both of us were only 18 years old. I couldn't speak any Korean at all, so Taecyeon was my translator at that time. (Laughs) He was both my translator and a fellow trainee at the same time. It was a pity that he wasn't paid for the job though. (Laughs)
TY: We were also roommates. But when we first met, I thought he was a Korean person so I had said "annyeonghaseyo" to him, when he just went "Huh? Huh?" so I was thinking, "Why isn't he answering me?" (Laughs)
NK: Ahahaha. Taecyeon still wore his glasses at that time.
TY: And Nichkhun's hair was standing so upstraight that it gives the feeling of "What the hell is this!?" (Bursts into laughter)
NK: Ah, so embarrassing. I guess that's just me in my younger years.

---What kind of teenager were you when you were in the States?
NK: In short, I had this California feeling~.
TY: I had a Boston feeling.
NK: Taecyeon is the so-called "model student" type of teenager.

---Do you like studying?
TY: Of course!
NK: He is quite intelligent. Like we can be in a totally different conversation when he'd suddenly talk about science or history.
TY: I don't have any particular favorite, but I am generally really interested in world history. I really read a lot of history books in the past.
NK: I'm more of a "sports student" rather than a "model student." I started playing badminton when I was 9 years old, I even went to big matches. My father had adviced that this could be one of my possibilities.
TY: He's very good at it.
NK: I've only had a badminton battle with Taecyeon once and no more after that.
TY: It's very tiring to chase after the shuttlecock here and there, so it's definitely a no-no! (Laughs)
NK: Badminton is harder than you think.

---Were you worried when you had to come back to Asia from the States?
TY: At first, I had this "Let's see where this takes me" kind of mindset, rather than "Let's do this!" But after I debuted, my mindset had finally changed to "Okay, let's do this till the end!"

---If you weren't in 2PM, then what do you think you'd be doing in Boston right now?
NK: He probably would've turned into a teaching Professor at a university by now.
TY: What the? (Laughs)
NK: At the age of 24.
TY: I'm not THAT intelligent! But even so, I really liked studying then, so I probably would have been majoring in history at a university by now. And who knows, maybe I decided to become an expert in World History..
NK: I can't even remember what I was doing back then. But still, I do remember that I wanted to be a pianist..

---Memories during your trainee days?
NK: I had to wake Taecyeon up every single morning. (Laughs) He still had to finish high school in Korea, so he had to set his alarm to 7 o'clock in the morning because of that, but he never wakes up. From what I remember, his alarm song was "Singin' in the Rain."
TY: Tarararara~ (Starts singing)
NK: I would always be shouting "Taecyeon, Taecyeon," but since he never wakes up, I'd be the one who shuts his alarm off. Every single morning!
TY: I'm not a morning person.

---When did you started feeling close?
NK: I think we got close right away.
TY: We didn't have any arguments, not even once. (Laughs)
NK: Though no doubt, we did have small things where we weren't satisfied with each other, but there was never a situation where we'd fight or say things like "I hate you!"
TY: That's right.

---If you were to give an example?
NK: Eum.. for example, maybe when we're discussing dancing.

---Only things like that?
NK: We'd discuss it until we change and fix ourselves for the better. Also at times when we felt like we had done well, but still feel certain insecurities, too.
TY: Ahahaha. But he's the most strict when it comes to cleaning your room. He also say things like "Shush, be quiet" a lot.
NK: That's right, that's right.
TY: Come to think of it, he's quite strict when it comes to work too. He says things like "Do this properly!" a lot.

"If I were to do this again, I'll work very hard on it."

NK: The moment I arrived in Korea, I had immediately started training (singing and dancing), and I also started attending Korean classes. But aside from that, Taecyeon had always been by my side translating for me.
TY: That's right. We were like "1+1" or something.
NK: "1+1" (Laughs)
TY: We gave off this "Taecyeon sticks to Nichkhun without a fail and Nichkhun also sticks to Taecyeon without a fail as they move around!" kind of feeling to other people. (Laughs)
NK: And because we were like that, people who work at the company warned us that my Korean would not improve if we kept moving around together, speaking English to each other. But still, we kept moving around like that for 3 years. (Laughs) So in the end, the staff would say things like "Stop talking in English!"
TY: At first, the fellow staff would say things like "Taecyeon-ah, thank you for being our translator"... (Laughs)
NK: But then since we stayed like that for 3 years, the staff got mad and would say things like, "Taecyeon! Don't you dare use English with Nichkhun! And stop sticking onto Nichkhun!" instead. (Laughs)
TY:At that time, I'd have this "Huh? Did I do something wrong?" kind of feeling. (Laughs)

---If given the chance to go back to your past and try to do that one thing properly once again, what would that be?
NK: I'd work even harder. On dancing, singing, learning Korean..... everything.
TY: (Deeply nods)
NK: Because then, we still wouldn't know what kind of job we'd do in the future.
TY: I also think that I'd work even harder. Back then, if there was a new dance or song, then we'd practice just that for a month and then we'd have a test. In other words, I'd learn just one new dance every month. But these days, we have this mindset that we'd be in trouble if we can't master the steps in just a few days. Because we'll also be showing it on TV too. It's like we have to finish everything in time no matter what. And then by the end of the month, we'd feel really at ease as we exclaim, "We still have a month left!"

---Traits that have changed and haven't changed at all from each other?
NK: Taecyeon's intelligence hasn't changed at all. And as for the change, I think his body got bigger.
TY: Because I didn't exercise at all back then.
NK: But still, his height was the same as now. He has really matured a lot from then and acts much more professionally. I think he's still on the way of maturing, even now. I don't mean this as in like talking wisely or something along those lines, I mean as in he knows what he has to do for this job. He can even wake up at 7 in the morning now. (Laughs)
TY: Though waking up early is not a problem these days, the real problem now is whether I can continue staying up after that. (Laughs) The fact that Nichkhun is nice and honest to everyone hasn't changed. And what has changed is he carries more self-confidence these days and knows exactly what he's doing. His Korean has also improved a lot. (Laughs)

---Since Taecyeon grew up in the States, wouldn't you have forgotten your Korean by then?
TY: There are times where I'd get confused. Because my Korean level is only of an elementary school student.. and then suddenly I had to move back to Korea so I was clueless about a lot of words. Though not as clueless as Nichkhun was. (Laughs)

---Are you still learning Japanese, even now?
NK: He can already speak Japanese comfortably, but as for me, I'm not up to that level yet.
TY: Before we came to Japan, we were told that "If you can't speak Japanese, then there'll be a big gap between you and your fans." So because of that, we got really worried and started to work hard on learning Japanese. We're still learning even now!

---The hardest thing you've experienced during your time working in Japan?
TY: Though it's not to the point where it'll be a big problem to us, there was quite the difference in terms of culture, so we were pretty culture shocked.
NK: That's right, we were.
TY: Come to think of it, Korea, America, and Japan, each of them are really different.
NK: Each of them has a different feeling. In America, the working culture is quite carefree and people don't pay attention to you as much. While in Korea, it's completely the opposite and they're extremely detailed.
TY: I guess you could say they're very serious about details? And also about every little things.
NK: When we came to Japan, the fact that everybody was extremely punctual really surprised us, though it's actually a very good habit in reality. And also, the fact that you must definitely introduce yourself properly and that they're much more detailed. (Laughs)
TY: That's right. They're up another floor more detailed than us. (Laughs) Regardless of cultures, I don't think they've just been created now. Instead, I think it was already like this since a long time ago. The same goes for Korea, Japan, and America. As we experience each of these differences, we'd always try to match with it and move on.
NK: There are a lot of differences that can't be explained through words. We can't really list exactly what the differences are that we've experienced, but one thing for sure is there is a clear and obvious difference.

"Thoughts about family and future goals."

---Do you invite your family to each of your concerts in every country?
TY: Our family would be the very first.
NK: My family has become my personal motivation to keep on going.
TY: Every time our families come to our concert, we would have dinner with them by ourselves.
NK: And also, Taecyeon's parents would always be translating for my parents. (Laughs) Regardless of the generation, the same situation applies even to our parents.

---Have you thought of what kind of family you'd want to have?
TY: Yes..? I've never thought that far. (Laughs) Let me think for a moment.. (Seriously ponders for a long while) Well firstly, Khun has a rather large family and a very strong bond between the siblings. So I thought if I were to build a family, then wouldn't the best family conditions be a lot of children while they have a close bond with each other?
NK: There's a possibility that my future wife will be intimidated by the number of members in my family. Because if we were to have a gathering, the number of people could easily pass over 50, so she might be shocked. If my future wife can adapt herself to this situation and everybody accepts her, then I think it's impossible to let her go.

---How about Taecyeon?
NK: Taecyeon still thinks that he can only be with a woman who can manage herself well. A woman who can manage herself, a good mother, and also a good cook. Even though Taecyeon is also a good cook himself...
Moreover, she has to take care of him too. Because he can't even handle his own business that well. (Laughs) I think a woman who can still care for him even though he starts doing something else instead of finishing his work, is good for him.

---I think both of you have challenged acting by now. Nichkhun had appeared in a Thai movie titled "Seven Something."
NK: It was a very meaningful experience for me, considering I really do want to continue on acting. But at that time, I was lacking time to prepare and practice my acting skills to film for that movie. And I couldn't even meet the fellow actors before filming for the movie either. So it was extremely awkward for me at first. I think everything went well because my fellow female partner was much more experienced and older than me, but.. since I've begun to improve myself too, I think the filming ended quite quickly every time because of this.

---Taecyeon also appeared in the Japanese drama "99 Days With a Star."
TY: I am planning on pursuing acting in the future. Although I do want to appear on different movies or dramas every year, since 2PM was busy with schedules in 2012, I don't think it's possible to reach that goal for now.

---What's the difference between acting and singing to each of you?
TY: Instead of saying that I'm a singer or I'm a dancer, I think I feel more like an entertainer who's expanding his turf. Everything is considered entertainment to me.
NK: Though there are certain things that I like about singing, dancing and standing in front of thousands of people, acting is not as comfortable. There's only me and a camera, and yet I already find it difficult to be at ease. So I think there's nothing else I can do other than just keep doing this until I can feel that I am "right here," at this new place.

---What will you be in 10 years time?
NK: I'll be 34 years old. Will I be married by then?
TY: I don't think I will ever get married. Back then, I was thinking of marrying at a young age, but it's clearly impossible now. I'm always busy with work.
NK: That's right.
TY: I'm also having fun with work.

---Will you do activities in Asia? Or maybe globally?
TY: Globally would be nice, but I think continuing to promote ourselves in Asia is our true thing. I think experiencing different cultures along the way will be quite nice as well.
NK: I think we're all really close with each other right now, and we are all the same human beings who probably want to stay together as long as we can.

---How about 20 years from now?
NK: I'll be 44 years old. If I already have a family by then, I'd want to invest some time to my family and children. And who knows, maybe I would open a cafe or restaurant in Thailand. I think I'm already on my way to happiness.
TY: After I went to Africa (for a TV program) together with Nichkhun and came back, I was thinking of doing some more international collaboration activities or worldwide development activities.

---Will you still be friends after 10, 20 years have passed?
TY: Of course!
NK: I think we'd probably gather each of our families and go on trips together.
TY: Ahahaha!
NK: I've imagined the scene of introducing each of our family members to each other as we say things like, "This is my son!" "It's Uncle Taecyeon!" (Laughs)

Q How do you feel being a presenter for Mirage again?
K: I’m glad and proud to be a part of such a great project to help Thailand just like the ECO CAR project. This is an age of ECO CAR. The car can reduce pollution and also the global warming. During this period many people have been interested in ECO CAR. I’m glad to be the person who stimulates Thai people to concern about economical both for money and the fuel. Especially about global warming

Q Yesterday you came for the CF filming. How was it?
K: Um… It was hot (laugh) and so much fun. This was film in Thailand. We shot at Asiatique along Jaopraya river. So in this CF you will see the scene along the river. This is my first time at Asiatique as well. I didn’t know that there is a beautiful place in such a small alley. I think next time I will go there for travel.

Q: If you would like to compare Nichkhun and Mitsubishi Mirage, is there anything in common?
K: UM What can I say? If I said I can’t turn on my remote control is something I have in common is it ok (laugh) Economy !! Since I am quite economical. Once I need to buy something I am so economical. Mitsubishi Mirage is so economical only 22 km/liter. It’s really amazing.

Q: If you have to choose Mirage for 2PM members who you will choose to buy for
I will give Mirage to Wooyoung. He just passed a driver license exam but he didn’t buy a car yet. I will recommend him this Mirage it was such a small car easy to drive comfortable and economical. He would like it.

Q: Because of many good points this is why you bought Mirage for your younger sister as well.
K: Yes , Actually I bought Mirage for my sister but my dad take it (laugh) Since he just sold his old car then he use Mirage. My sister has to use the bus instead. (laugh) So I may need to buy another one. I used to sit in the car while my dad drove Mirage. It was so comfortable. There are a lot of space more than I thought. I am quite tall and have a problem sitting in some cars but Mirage I can sit both in the front and back seat.

Q: This is a request question from staff. On the back of truck in Thailand they will have a sticker phase with nice slogan. If you would like to create one, what phase will you put on the sticker?
K: Oh I never thought you gonna ask this kind of question. Let me think a bit. “Khun made Khun (you) more economical” It this okay? This suit this car the most. My fans start processing the sticker now (laugh)

Q: This visit not only for Mirage presenter you also have a chance to go to child disability foundation as well. How was it?
K: All the kids are so cheerful, always smile and so cute. At first I thought how we could play with them. Will they know me? Once I arrived they are screaming for me. Asked for my autograph and would like to take pictures with me. They are so welcome. They have shows as well. The wheelchair dance they can do the drift on the wheelchair do the acrobatics as well. Some playing Thai instruments. They are also encouraging me a lot. I am really thanks them for yesterday.

Q: What do you mean by encouraging you ?
K: During my work , I faced some obstacles , tried , and feel discourage  Once I saw them yesterday. Some of them don’t have one leg, one arm but they can do it. Like when they eat, one of the kids doesn’t have arm but he tried to use his mouth and eat by himself. But we, us who has everything can’t do it. They made me think once again that once we have endeavor nothing we cannot do. I really thank them for encouraging me. Actually yesterday I intended to encourage them but I was the one who got encourage by them.

Q: Do you have time to do this kind of activity in Korea?
K: Yes ,once I have time to be with disabled children. I was a volunteer at a disability children foundation in a temple for one and a half month. I went there to help them taking a shower , feed them and play with them. I feel so good to return something back to the society as well.

Q: This month is December. The 5th of December is special day for Thai people would you say something to the King.
K: All Thais love the King. I also love the King. I would like him to be with us for a long time that would possible. Pardon me I don’t know any royal words. Don’t think I am impolite. From the bottom of my heart I want him to be with us for a long time. Long Live the King. And for father's day, don’t forget your father and return your father's favor. Take your father out or eat out. Find some activities that both of you can do together. I am jealous of everyone who is able to be with your father. I always in Korea during father’s day , mother’s day. I can only call them. So I wish everyone to be with your dad don’t forget to tell him that you love him and prostrate him. Start from this special day and do it everyday.

Q: So this time to all the people around the world. Will you wish all Thai Happy new year?
K : for this new year I wish everyone to have a good health. This will be a good start. Don’t forget the new year resolution and do all the best. I wish you all to be healthy and may your wishes come true. Hope you all will succeed.

Q: Lastly would you please say something tor fans who are waiting for you?
K: Thank youto those who have been waiting for me. Now I have time to work in Thailand. Thank you for  always encouraging me. From now on, I hope I would have time to go to Thailand more often. To see Thai fans more. I wish everyone healthy and wealthy.

The fanclub is delighted with 2PM's Nichkhun, who treated disabled children of Pakkret to a meal as a presenter for Mitsubishi Mirage

On Saturday, November 30th, 2012 at 10:00am, an event for the foundation to help those with disabilities, under the patronage of the royal princess, took place in Prakket. Nichkhun Horvejkul, a member of Korea's top boyband group 2PM, joined in and treated the disabled children to a meal sponsored by Mitsubishi Mirage (Thailand) as a presenter.

Nichkhun is partaking in this activity for children with disabilities, as well as winners of the Mirage Family. This consists of approximately 60 people and also includes the executives of Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand), led by marketer, Mr. Yuji Yamada. The children were given lunch, ice cream, and also had the chance to participate in recreational activities in hopes of building support and smiles within these underprivileged children. The atmosphere was filled with smiles and playfulness. The children were delighted to have spent their time and share their joy with a superstar.

Nichkhun gave an encouraging message to the children, "I wish you to always be/become a good person, and please grow to be a good example for our nation's future."

2PM's Thai member Nickhun and baby ulzzang Mason Moon resemble each other.

On the last day of October, Mason's Facebook fan page uploaded the photo above of Nickhun and Mason and proves that they are look alike.

In the photo shared, Nickhun and Mason are both wearing sunglasses with the same smile.  Mason resemblance Nickhun and the reason why he is being called as 'Baby Nickhun'.

If you still remember, Mason Moon starred in a drama with Jang Geun Suk when he was younger and one of the Moon brothers T-ara took care during 'Hello Baby'.

We can see that Mason has grown up since the last broadcast of Hello Baby but still a really adorable cute boy.

However, Moon brothers are greeting you all a Happy Halloween with paper face masks that look like the little boys made it on their own.

Who still remembers these Korean-Canadian cute boys?

Nichkhun has taken a time off since July as he got involved in a DUI accident. Once a star is exposed to public criticism, first and foremost, that start is cut off from commercial advertisements. However, that did not happen to Nichkhun who gets the biggest amount of commercial advertising deals among 2PM members. That is a special case.

When Kang Hodong got involved in a tax controversy, even after the temporary retirement announcement the famous Igatan drug commercial kept on being broadcast, however that was an exceptional case. No matter how much the advertisers like their product model, in case of censure or public criticism, the star is immediately cut off from the deal in fear that the tainted image would somehow be connected to the image of the product. That is so, because they cannot rule out the possibility of going into a minus despite spending money on advertising.

Nichkhun’s advertisement deals were not cut off even after he attracted public criticism back in July. Even though it was a very sensitive matter, it is said that not a single company, that uses Nichkhun as its product model, was swayed by what happened. On the contrary – it has been reported that some companies were in discussion to extend their contracts with Nichkhun, and there were even proposals for additional contracts as well.

Of course, it would be too drastic to say that the public completely forgave Nichkhun for what happened since he was not cut out from the commercials. However, the fact that Nichkhun didn’t even receive as much as a rebuke (?) from the advertising industry, when he committed a personal mistake, shows that his overall image management before the accident has been carried out very well.

Nichkhun had an image of a cute and handsome young man (“nuna’s romance”) who quite unexpectedly had a mature and relaxed character, and inspite of being a foreign star, he didn’t receive an exclusive attention from the public (T/N: the writer means to say that Nichkhun didn’t get a special treatment and was treated like other Korean celebrities).

Previous sponsorhips and donations for the needy also had their own share in building a good image. On the 5th of October Nichkhun left to Tanzania as a member of the MBS’s KOICA Dream group, and that also doesn’t deviate far from his usual image. Nichkhun is scheduled to return on the 21st of October after having lived in the same conditions as the local inhabitants of the Saninga Island for 15 days, helping people who live without water and electricity.

Nichkhun’s agency JYP Entertainment has released a press statement that after the volunteer work in Tanzania, Nichkhun is scheduled to resume his scheduled activities immediately. Therefore, it seems that we will be able to see Nichkhun again in November.

The producers of MBC’s ‘God of Victory’ have decided to edit out Nichkhun, who had been involved in a DUI accident, as much as possible from the upcoming episode to be aired on 2nd September.

The 3rd episode of MBC’s ‘God of Victory’ features Korea’s longest-running idol group Shinhwa and idol group 2PM, where the members compete in 10 rounds of matches.

‘God of Victory’ producer Kim Min-jong told Star News, “For the upcoming 2nd September episode, we will be editing out Nichkhun’s scenes as much as we can.”

He added, “We will edit out his scenes as far as we can without disrupting the flow of the programme.”

The first episode of ‘God of Victory’ was aired on 19 August, and the show features rivals from various fields of sports and showbiz pitting themselves against each other in 10 rounds of competitions. The show has adopted the format of Infinity Challenge’s highly popular ‘HaHa vs Hongchul’ special into a regular programme.

The first episode featured Kim Suro and Tak Jaehoon, where Kim Suro was declared the victor with a 6-4 victory over Tak Jaehoon.

The next episode features the battle of the idols, with original idols Shinhwa pitting themselves again beastly idols 2PM. The recording of this episode had already been completed in May.

However, as Nichkhun was involved in a DUI accident on 24 June, the producers have no choice but to edit out his scenes.

Meanwhile, even though ‘God of Victory’ is a spin-off from ‘Infinity Challenge’, the competitive spirit of the participants is keeping audiences entertained. All eyes are now on ‘God of Victory’ for the upcoming match-ups to be featured on the show.

Nichkhun Horvejkul, the Thai guy in the South Korean boyband 2PM, is an ever-resent personality, appearing regularly here in concerts, on TV and in commercials.
But he’s hardly ever in Thailand for more than a few hours before he has to get back on a plane and return to Seoul. The best his family can hope for is a quick hug in the hotel room.
Since joining 2PM, Nichkhun’s longest visit back home was for the production of “Rak Jed Pee Dee Jed Hon”, the omnibus movie project to celebrate the seventh anniversary of film studio GTH. It’ll be released in July.
Nichkhun says he wishes he could spend more time in his homeland. And his 2PM bandmates are anxious to have an extended Thai holiday, maybe with Nichkhun as their tour guide.
But who knows when they’ll ever get a break? The Korean boys will all have to report for military duty – that’s the best chance for them to relax. And then, hopefully, Nichkhun can take a little R-and-R as well.

He is the designated rapper in the six-member Korean boyband 2PM, and this 24-year-old Thai-Chinese is arguably the heart breaker of the group. The facts don’t lie:759,000 Facebook fans, 1.5 million Twitter followers, a seemingly obscene number of fan sites dedicated to his whereabouts, and a Madame Tussauds wax figure in his likeness. His bandmates? Their combined statistics and accolades don’t even come close. We think his adoring female fans would want to know this: the babyface superstar might just be ready to settle down.

MANIFESTO: You are an American-born Thai-Chinese. You have had quite an adventure growing up in different countries. Share with us what your childhood was like.

NICHKHUN HORVEJKUL: I was born in Los Angeles, and we moved back to Thailand when I was two. I started to learn Thai as my first language and when I was 12, I moved to New Zealand to pick up English. So it was a whole new experience because I didn’t know the language, and I went to a very strict boarding school for three years. Then, I moved to America for about four or five years when I was 14, followed by Korea.

M: And where do you call home? Thailand, United States or Korea?

NH: I have three homes right now. I call Thailand home, of course, because my family is still there. And I feel like I am home when I am in the United States too since I am comfortable using English there. I’ve been living in Korea for six years now, and I am used to everything about the country – the food, people, tradition, and culture – so I call this home, too.

M: You were a model before you became a singer. What made you want to give the entertainment industry a shot?

NH: I went to watch a Korean concert in LA, and I was scouted there. (An agent invited him to audition for JYP Entertainment, now known as JYP Corp., one of the biggest management companies in Korea.) I was only 17 at the time. It wasn’t my dream to become a singer because I was a shy little boy, and I couldn’t even speak in front of public, or give a class presentation. Then, the agency didn’t know which department to place me in, so they started with modelling because I just had to look good. Soon, they trained me to sing, dance, and speak Korean as well as some acting lessons. That’s how I got into the group.

M: Do you think you have made the right choice in moving to Korea?

NH: When I first moved to Korea, I was thinking that this was not my place because I didn’t know how to sing and dance, and I wasn’t as interested in learning. I never dreamt of being a celebrity because I cherish my privacy. I am still shy; I like to be in my own world.

M: The shyness could be your Thai genes coming through.

NH: Yeah, we like to keep to ourselves.

M: Do you remember the feeling when you first arrived in Korea, and had to adapt quickly?

NH: Korea wasn’t bad because I was already 18 when I moved there. The worst was my experience in New Zealand because I was only 12 and I had to stay in a boarding school. I remember waking up at 5am every morning and running three miles before school, and I just felt so alone. I cried three times when I was there because I felt like going home. And then I got used to it, and now it is fun to visit another country, and even learning a new language isn’t as hard anymore. The hard part is to make the place your home and to feel comfortable there. But to get there is kind of hard if you don’t open up and learn how to deal with others, how to eat the food, how to speak the language, how to be local…

M: What are some of your challenging moments in the industry?

NH: I think it is the training and the endless pursuit of trying to get recognition for my hard work. Of course, I am not a natural born singer or dancer; I just want people to know that I am trying and improving, and I’m not taking this lightly as a way to make money. I’m trying to carve out a lifetime career. I want to prove that even though I am not as good yet, I will be better.

M: Do you prefer modelling or singing?

NH: I didn’t really get into modelling that much before I became a singer. It was just a short period of time, and I needed to find something to do in-between jobs. Now I have progressed into acting, which I am very interested in. I told my company that my goal is to be in Hollywood to represent Asia. Since I’ve started working in Korea, Thais have regarded me as a K-Pop star.

M: What about your fans? Any strange encounters to report?

NH: When we were touring the United States as the opening act for the Wonder Girls, one of the fans threw her bra on stage, and it caught my foot while I was dancing and I tried to shake it off. It became quite an issue on the internet. So this was probably the oddest thing that has happened to me.

M: What about the weirdest gift you have received from a fan?

NH: My fans don’t really give me anything. But once, I received a gold key. It is not weird but I am not used to receiving this sort of stuff, and it is worth quite a lot. I asked myself if it was right to have accepted it.

M: What would you like to have accomplished by the end of your career?

NH: I want to be successful in life, and not just in my career. I want to be a good person, a good parent, a good husband. Right now, I want to work hard, earn money and build up my career to a point where I could get married and start a family without any financial constraints. I’m preparing a good life for my family. It would be a bonus to continue being in this business and still retain my fame. But my main goal is to start a family.

M: Sounds like you have given this serious thought. Is there an ideal age that you plan to settle down?

NH: I think 10 years from now would be too late for me. I’m not sure and I have to see what the situation is. Maybe when I am 31 or 32 years old? I don’t want a wide age gap between the kids and me.

M: Let’s switch the topic to fashion. What is your definition of style?

NH: I don’t call myself stylish because I’m not into dressing up. I think people need to have some common sense in deciding what to wear. For me, my style is very Californian. In California, people just wear jeans and hoodies – I just throw on a shirt and a hoodie and I’ll be out the door.

M: 2PM has sported various styles for music videos and photoshoots. Is there a 2PM style that you would adopt for yourself or is this just part of your stage persona?

NH: For me and a few of the guys, it would just be an outfit, or an image, to put on a show. But for the others, they are really into the fashion element. They would study what others wear onstage at award shows and all. I don’t shop because if I do, I wouldn’t stop.

M: Do you don any disguises when you are out in public?

NH: I like to wear glasses, just regular ones. I would take out the lens. I just like it to cover my face, and for some reason, it makes me more comfortable to go out. I don’t know why, it’s just my thing.

M: Lastly, since you are dressed in Dior Homme for this entire shoot, how do you feel about the clothes you are wearing?

NH: It is luxurious. It’s what the “grown-ups” would wear. If this was a car, it would be a Ferrari or a Lamborghini – it has that class. If you want to be classy and want to look good, this is what you would wear.
