For someone who has no previous experience in acting, many people wondered how Lee-U joined the acting field, especially since he debuted as an idol singer. Lee-U said, “Kim Jaejoong-hyung who provided support and care for me during the audition for Elisabeth is a savior to me.”
After ‘Protect the Boss’, Jaejoong reached out to and provided support for Lee-U who was at a loss regarding his career at that time. The relationship between the two began with the 3rd episode of Happy Together in 2008. Lee-U indicated that after Happy Together, Jaejoong and him had been in constant contact and furthering their relationship.

Kim Junsu’s ‘Death (Tod)’ dominates the stage with his unique presence.
Whenever the Angels of Death with blonde hair and black wings dance their terrifyingly beautiful dance, ‘he’ will appear without fail. His sweet words of temptation with a dreamy whispered melody agitate and pierce through the listener’s heart. Like a devil, while his warm whisper ‘Only I can understand you’ is soaking through your cold and lonely heart, he steals your soul away.
The main focus in the story of musical ‘Elisabeth’ is the character Queen Elisabeth but unexpectedly, the one standing in the background of this story is ‘Death’. Having an unrestrained childhood but after a dramatic happening, Queen Elisabeth of Austria had her freedom snatched away and lived a life of a manipulated puppet. The fate of Elisabeth whose soul was tied up invisibly can be seen as a hanging marionette in a puppet show and the one who controls over the restrained soul of the Queen is indeed ‘Death’.
The composer of the musical, Sylvester Levay explained about ‘Death’ in an interview ‘A charming character who seduces the audience’. In addition, ‘He is so charming that he gives the audience a strong strength to shake off the fear of death.’ Sylvester Levay also shared a touching anecdote ‘There was a girl who was sick and afraid of death but after watching the musical, she gained back the desire to live a happy life.’ Just like what Sylvester Levay has said, the allure of ‘Death’ in this musical is fatal. How to portray such a character which is not human, beast, angel or even devil?! With the feet as fast as a hidden eagle and footsteps as sensual as a killer leopard, he comes closer and stabs his dagger to the vital point of the target.
While a beast moves its body in order to hunt for prey, ‘Death’ and his Angels dance their appealing dance in order to put the target’s forever love into Death’s hand. The fascinating dance between the party who seduces – ‘Death’ and the Angels of Death- and the party who tries to escape – Elisabeth- is paradoxically extremely beautiful and magnificent. Not only Elisabeth but even the audience fell for his dance.

Indefinable appearance is also an interesting point of the multicoloured ‘Death’. Particularly, the songs of ‘Death’ are also filled with various aspects. On the wedding day of Elisabeth and Joseph, he sings “Are you sincere with your choice? Your reverie about him is just an illusion”, then shouts out crazily “The last dance. My last dance. I will dance with you in the end. You are only mine” and shows the insane jealousy of a ‘man who fell in love’. However, while demanding Elisabeth’s son- Rudolf to rebel “What is there to hesitate. You are rescuing the world. Right now, this is fate. Only you can rescue this collapsing world”, he is an ‘evil’ who is playing with the hope of life.
The musical doesn’t build any restriction for ‘Death’. Coming from the depressing sensibility of Elisabeth, his symbolic presence also changes with Elisabeth’s state of mind; one moment, he would fill up her loneliness with love but the next moment, he desperately wants to set free every string of hope. He is a shadow who follows after Elisabeth endlessly. Also, it might be reasonable that he said to Elisabeth “Only I can understand you and give you the freedom”. ‘Death’ is no other than another self of Elisabeth that she invented in order to express the irresistible dark greed.
Being able to meet 3 different actors with 3 different colors of ‘Death’ on stage is another unconventional enjoyment in the musical ‘Elisabeth’. Having different personalities, Ryu Junghan, Kim Junsu and Song Changeui diversely interpret their own charming ‘Death’.
Specially, Kim Junsu’s ‘Death’ has received favourable comment from the audience and dominated the stage with his unique presence. Younger than other two actors, he has given an unexpected charming interpretation in response to the doubts about how he would portray a nonhuman character. Simply as a sensual and manly character, while forming a love triangle with the Emperor Joseph and Queen Elisabeth, he becomes a ‘dangerous being’ which is not woman, man, human or spirit and above that dangerous boundary, he reveals his deadly beauty.
Being neutral in between woman and man, sometimes in whispering high tone, sometimes in low tone, the seducing Kim Junsu goes back and forth in both sides and surprises the audience with his dual voice which creates a clever combination. Not belonging to any particular area, he added his unique sensibility into the bisexual allure of the transcendent ‘Death’ who attracts anything, and revived the appealing character.

On the 14th, ‘Elisabeth’ ranked first among 342 musicals on Interpark’s daily, weekly, monthly and yearly ranking chart.

The ticket fever for ‘Elisabeth’ is such an exceptional case in the industry.

Even though this is the premiere of ‘Elisabeth’ in Korea, the musical has been highly anticipated and gained the audience’s attention for a few years. Ever since the opening performance, the musical draws a full house everyday and receives explosive response from the audience.

Moreover, it has been a long time since the theatre is full even on weekdays or on weekends, with whichever combination of casts."

After watching the show, an audience commented “After experiencing the massive scale, the acting and singing ability of the cast, I think it is worth the ticket price. It feels like receiving recompense for the expensive ticket.”, “This is an interesting musical which is rarely seen recently. I will recommend it to my friends and I will go watch it two or three more times”.

JYJ member Junsu has been grabbing a lot of attention recently for his role as Death in the Austrian musical Elisabeth. We were very interested when C-Jes Entertainment announced Junsu’s role, and the musical has quickly become a sell-out show.
While it’s no surprise that Junsu would find success as a musical star due to his previous achievements in Mozart! and Tears in Heaven, he has even garnered praise from the musical’s composer Sylvester Lelay who told Star News that his performance on opening night was “perfect and satisfying.”
Clearly satisfying the ensnared hearts of his female fans, it has been reported by Interpark (Korea’s version of Ticketmaster) that nearly all of Elisabeth’s ticket buyers are female. In fact, The Charlotte Theater where Elisabeth is performed has needed to accommodate these ladies by converting some of their male restrooms into female ones on Junsu’s performance days! Not surprisingly, all 20 of Junsu’s shows have been sold out with a staggering 31,960 tickets sold in under ten minutes.
With such eye-popping theatrics as Junsu’s onstage kiss of death with co-star Lee U (Former F.Cuz member Lee Seunghyun) playing the character of Rudolph, it’s no wonder why the female fans are flocking in to see the show!

T/N: LeeU is a former F.Cuz member.
JYJ’s Kim Junsu gave LeeU (Lee Seunghyun) warm advice for his first ‘Elisabeth’ musical performance.
On March 1, LeeU met the audience as Rudolf in the musical for the first time. Kim Junsu began tweeting, “Today is Seunghyeon-ee’s first perf as Rudolph! It’s also his first step as a musical actor..”
He supported LeeU by tweeting, “When I saw your face yesterday, your face and your nervous appearance were similar to mine. I remembered that I was trembling before I first went up the stage as Mozart two years ago,” and “And more than anything else, this genre called musical is not to be done alone, isn’t it..? You’ll have a lot of strength as you create the drama with the best stars, and you’ll gain courage~ Trust in your actor hyungs and nunas^^ Maybe they will be able to correct everything that you do~ I wish for a successful first performance.”
He also tweeted, “Of course, hyung, too, is still a newbie as a musical actor, however, I’ll cheer on you as your sunbae who made the first step before you did..The Rudolph whom you’re thinking of.. Don’t get cold feet playing the Rudolph you created, and try to let your conviction unfold~ At least, the lead as Rudolph of today’s performance is you.. just hwaiting unconditionally!!!"
In addition, he was sorry that he could not watch LeeU’s performance. He tweeted, “I cannot go today because of [my] work so I’m sorry~~though [the performance] will make you nervous.. you’ll forget everything the moment you go up the stage and I’ll pray that the Rudolph that you have completely created will only be left on the stage~^^”
Meanwhile, besides Kim Junsu and LeeU, ‘Elisabeth’ musical also includes the appearances of Kim Sun Young, Ok Juhyun, Song Chang-ee, Kim Soo Yong, Park Eun Tae, Choi Min Cheol and Min Yonggi. It will be showing at Hannam-dong’s Blue Square until May 13.
