To mark North Korea’s shelling of Yeonpyeong Island on Nov. 23, 2010, singer Kim Jang Hoon gave a free concert on the island Tuesday night.

The concert, titled “Yeonpyeong Arirang,” was held on a truck that was converted to a stage. Kim entertained more than 500 residents with all of his hit songs at the island’s main sports complex.

Kim also performed on the island last year.

“It’s my second consecutive year to give a concert here, and I was worried that you’d all be sick of me. Tonight I want to be like a brother and a friend to you all,” said Kim, who funded the concert and treated about 900 residents to a barbecue and makgeolli (rice beer).

Kim said he wanted to buy presents for residents but could not afford it. Late last month, it was revealed Kim had run out of money due to partaking in too many charitable causes. He said he’ll start performing at nightclubs and other adult venues in order to raise funds to continue his activism.

Kim’s agency said on May 25 that the singer’s debt amounts to some 700 million won ($593,600).

Singer Kim Jang-hoon, an outspoken activist for “comfort women,” a euphemistic reference to Korean women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military, and Korea’s claim over Dokdo islets, is on the brink of bankruptcy.

Kim’s agency announced yesterday that the star is in financial trouble because he is committed to too many causes.

“In order to raise enough money for the upcoming ‘8.15 Dokdo Crossing’ project as well as another donation to give out rice to more than 1.2 million people, Kim will have to make his rounds at club and adult venues around the country,” said a representative from Kim’s agency.

Despite the fact that Kim spent most of this month taking part in 30 different events where he was asked to perform, his expenses are thought to outweigh his earnings from appearing at the functions.

The agency representative said that Kim’s debt amounts to some 100 million won ($592,808) at the moment.

Singer Kim Jang-hoon has set a new challenge for himself: to swim the 215 kilometers from the coast of Jukbyun in North Gyeonsang to the islet of Dokdo on Aug. 15 to mark Korea’s National Liberation Day.
The entertainer, who is sponsoring the “8.15 Dokdo Crossing” project, said that as well as supporting the project financially, he wants to offer his body to it as well.

The event’s organizers from Korea National Sport University said that Kim’s support has been crucial this year.
“Our swimmers are set to swim from Jukbyun to Dokdo to reiterate the fact that the islet belongs to Korea! We could think of none other than Kim to head the movement,” said Professor Choi Kang-jin from the university.

Kim will undertake training for the remaining three months in order to keep up with the students. The swimmers will depart on Aug. 13 in order to arrive by the 15th, which is the day that Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule back in 1945.

Kim has been involved with Korea’s territorial claim over the islets for some time. Earlier this year, he placed posters to raise awareness of the nationalist issue in 16 cities throughout the world.
