From the "Guardian" article :
"Bored by Cowell pop? Try K-pop"

The biggest surprise at last month's MTV European Music awards didn't come from the outfits chosen Lady Gaga, or that weird naked man roaming around the stage. In fact, the most unexpected moment arrived towards the end of the ceremony, when the winner of best worldwide act award was announced. The winners of the fan-driven award were Korean group Big Bang, who won 58m votes to beat Britney Spears. This was the one act that night most viewers wouldn't have known.

Bigbang's victory shed light on the rise and rise of Korean music across Europe. Korean pop – K-pop for short – has become one of South Korea's most notable exports in recent years.
So, how does K-pop grow in the West from here? Can it make the transition from being an internet-based phenomenon, with a self-selecting if hugely active fanbase, to crossing over into the mainstream media? Was Big Bang’s win at the European Music awards the shape of things to come, or just an indication of how well-organised those fans are – in short, was it K-pop’s Belle and Sebastian at the Brits moment? Simon Hong, the CEO of Cube Entertainment, the label whose bands came to London a couple of weeks ago, is optimistic but cautious: “The show in Brixton is a good opportunity for this part of the world to get a glimpse of our high-level artists in Korea. But there’s a lot more work to be done, so K-pop is just on the starting line.”

After a long hiatus from the entertainment programmes MBLAQ manage to have their comeback on Music Bank last week to promote their third mini album, Mona Lisa. The song 'Mona Lisa' produced by Ji In, Wontag and Rado with a catchy-spanish-electronic rythm filled by analog intruments, is a different style of MBLAQ that shown previously. The lyrics of the song compared a face-expressionless women as mona lisa that makes men longing for her love. For sure all of MBLAQ fans is waiting for their performance on the television!

Super Junior held their official concert on 29 and 30 January at Singapore Indoor Stadium, letting the Singaporean audience catch a glimpse of their charm onstage. This also allowed the fans and idols to interact at a very close distance. Now let us review the most exciting moments of Super Show III.

The Most Attention Grabbing: Heechul

At the press conference, Heechul was the only member in Super Junior wearing a pair of sunglasses. During photo taking, Heechul definitely stood out by deliberately chosing to pose in a different manner from the other members. In the concert, he played a coquettish Lady Gaga, wearing red heels. He revealed his long and beautiful legs, making the females in the audience sigh. How could his legs be prettier than those of females!

Those who often watch Super Junior on television programs would know that the members like to play and joke around. When one reporter asked Heechul why he played Lady Gaga, he did not wait for the translator and reached for the microphone to reply. With the sentence “I’m genius”, Heechul showed that he did not need to rely on the translator to understand the reporter’s question. This caused the media present to laugh loudly.

During encore for the concert, a fan took out a big red flag, with the word “希” (part of Heechul’s chinese name) printed on it. Heechul was very excited and took the flag from the fan’s hands and ran around the entire stage with much pride.

The Most Moving: Kyuhyun, Yesung

Kyuhyun sang “New Endless Love” during his solo segment. He was admirable as despite being a Korean, he managed to sing the Chinese lyrics of the song accurately. Moreover, when Yesung performed his version of the title song “It Has to Be You” for “Cinderella’s Sister”, all the fans sang along with him, making Yesung extremely happy. Both their deep voices were very appealing, worthy of being the main vocals.

The One With The Most Antics: Leeteuk

Leeteuk is indeed the leader of Super Junior. Not only is he eloquent, he is also capable of different antics to please others. When asked about the challenges of wearing heels while dressing up as a woman, Leeteuk joked that his members often placed insoles into their shoes and that it was just like heels. He displayed a sense of humour while openly admitting to their modified heights.

One segment of the concert includes the members dressing up in clothes from other countries and the last to appear was the “rich Dubai businessman” Leeteuk. Other than offering water and towels to the fans, he pretended to be the God of Wealth in line with festivities. He shouted “Do you want money” as he threw red packets. During the “Bonamana” performance, he did not forget to remove half his jacket to reveal his shoulders, electritfying the fans and making them feel faint. After the second concert ended, Leeteuk even took off his shirt and threw it to fans.

The One Most Likely To Cause Nose Bleeds: Siwon

Leeteuk, Sungmin, Eunhyuk and Donghae have all revealed their chest, abdomen and back during the concert. However, the most impressive body belongs to Siwon and he was very willing to reveal his solid muscles during the concert, allowing the fans feast their eyes. Although the muscles of the other members are not bad, Siwon is still the the most easygoing member. He removed his shirt for both concerts and showed his V-shaped upper body and six packs to the honoured guests, causing the audience to scream.

The Most Caring: Leeteuk, Sungmin

When Super Junior first came here in June last year for a press conference, Siwon went down the stage to pass the microphone to a reporter who wanted to ask a question. This time for the press conference, as the workers could not find an extra microphone, it was Leeteuk’s turn to walk down and pass the microphone to a reporter. His actions were very caring and kind.

Although the members often interact with the fans, Heechul, Donghae and other members also take photographs of themselves using fans’ cameras. However, the one that left the deepest impression was Sungmin. Other than squatting down to pose for the cameras of fans in the mosh pit, he also constantly had a kind smile on his face, letting others feel good.

The Most Playful: Siwon, Shindong

The close relationship between the members naturally includes mischievious pranks. When the second concert was about to have an encore, the members used water bottles to spray water at the fans. Siwon poured the water on the stage and pretended to fall, hoping that the other members would accidentally slip and fall on that part of the stage. Also, he would suddenly sneak attacks on the other members while performing and even try to hug or kiss them. This set the audience’s hearts aflutter. While dressed as a fat version of Beyonce, Shindong suddenly lifted Eunhyuk’s miniskirt, causing Eunhyuk to frantically pull his skirt down, before anything was exposed.

The Most Multi-Talented: Sungmin

One moment he’s hanging from a wire, “spewing” smoke from both hands; another moment he’s with Leeteuk, sprinkling confetti while riding on blue balloons in midair; one moment he’s the guitar accompanist for Ryeowook’s solo; and another moment he’s dancing passionately with female dancers and revealing his chest during his solo segment. The normally gentle and quiet Sungmin is extremely busy during the concert, impressing the audience with his different talents.

The One With The Most “Fluent” English: Donghae

When Siwon, the most fluent in English in the group, said that they would be releasing their new album soon, Donghae immediately responded in English, “4 years later?” causing the fans to be stunned and disappointed. Donghae then comically waved and appeased everyone, “Just Kidding!”

After the concert for the second night ended and all the other members had said their goodbyes and left for backstage, Donghae stood on the stage alone and jokingly spoke in not so standard English, “Give me the music, I am solo this time”. He then quickly ran off the stage, letting the concert end on a perfect note with laughter.

Draw G's First Breath
G.NA
Playcube

3/5 Stars

Korea's Cube Entertainment has girl group 4Minute and boyband Beast in its stable. The company is now branching out with solo female act G.NA, who used to be part of an unimaginatively named girl quintet, 5 Girls.

The debut EP is heavy on guest star power, featuring Beast's Jun Hyung on the opening Number, I'll Back Off So You Can Live, and K-pop superstar Rain on the R&B duet Things I Want To Do IF I Have a Lover.

It is the aptly named Supa Solo, though, which swaggers with attitude, and on which G.NA shines brightest.

More importantly, it sound a little different from what is out there, and could help her stand out in the K-pop market crowded with lookalikes and soundalikes.

For a few days of last week, we all got to see the mighty Kim Hee Chul trending at number one spot on twitter's top ten worldwide trends and now, he's even managed to make his way onto a page of California's newspaper!

In the article, it states that Heechul is 'a popular South Korean singer who has become a hit on Twitter, with his fans bombarding the site with postings.' It also provides a brief introduction about who Super Junior is and mentions the status of their popularity throughout Asia.

The article then goes on to compare the amount of followers Heechul has compared to the popular Canadian/American singer, Justin Bieber and although Heechul does have slightly less, I think it's safe to say the amount of love and support ELFs show towards Heechul is enough.

At the end of the article, the event of the Thai police officers dancing to Super Junior's Sorry Sorry was brought up, probably to show how Super Junior and their songs have been able to spread to other particular countries.

Thanks to Belinda and Stephanie for the tip!

Positive thinking pays off for South Korean boyband 2AM in their new mini album I Did Wrong

The Korean entertainment scene can be a fickle world. So when South Korean boyband 2AM, known for their soulful ballads, wanted to do something different for their new repackaged mini album, they were worried their fans would defect.

The four-member group released the mini album, I Did Wrong, in March and included a new dance track of the same name.

The gamble paid off - I Did Wrong made it to the Top 40 of karaoke hits in South Korea within three months of its release.

In town for a showcase and to promote their album last Saturday, band leader Jo Kwon, 21, tells Life! through a translator: 'We've always been known for singing ballads and we were nervous about people's perceptions of us as we changed halfway from being a ballad group to singing dance tracks.

'We really trained very hard so that fans will like the new song in the repackaged album.'

Member Chang Min, 24, adds: 'We are glad that the response from everyone is so good, and it is a good form of encouragement for us.'

I Did Wrong is a repackaging of previous hits from their previous three albums with the addition of the title track as a new song.

Buoyed by their success, the pretty boy quartet will also be including more of such dance tracks in their new album, due out in September.

Chang says: 'We are not just focusing on ballads but will also look at fast numbers.'

While not quite in the ranks of, say, Super Junior, the band's first mini album, Can't Let You Go Even If I Die, which was released in January, sold a respectable 34,400 copies in South Korea within six months. Their agency also produced superstar South Korean girl group Wonder Girls.

Their success is a culmination of years of training. Jo, for instance, was a trainee for more than seven years before he was selected by his agency to be a star.

The quartet admit that they had a hard time as trainees.

Member Seul Ong, 23, says: 'We loved training because we were singing and dancing and that was what we liked to do. But we didn't know when we could debut, and that was very difficult for us. We felt like giving up from time to time.'

Youngest member Jin Woon, 19, agrees: 'We tried to overcome difficulties by thinking positively, and we encouraged one another along the way. It was good to have one another to depend on.'

And their fans, of course. The members use social networking site Twitter to stay in touch with their growing fan base.

Jo, who tweets several times a day, says he tweets in English more often for the sake of his international fans.

He adds: 'Whenever I tweet in English, I will check the spelling of my tweets several times before uploading them.'

In Singapore for the first time, the pop singers took time off to try the local delicacies - fried Hokkien mee and chicken rice.

Seul gives the food the thumbs-up, while Jo says: 'I've heard so much about the chilli crab and I must try it soon.'
