Speculation has been running rampant as to what's next for the reigning queen of figure skating, Kim Yuna.

Kim Yuna ended that speculation on Monday with an announcement that she will enter the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and retire afterward.

The 21-year-old admitted that she felt unmotivated after winning the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. But Kim said she found an unlikely source of inspiration from younger skaters training in Seoul during her extended break from competition.

This is of course, welcome news for true-blue fans of the ice-queen. As for those who got to know her as a multi-talented celebrity rather than an athlete, they’re in for a treat, as they’ll get to see her put on her game face.

Figure skater Kim Yuna again has withdrawn her libel suit accusing Prof. Hwang Sang-min, 49, of Yonsei University of defaming her on radio.

Kim’s agency, All That Sports, announced yesterday that despite the fact that Hwang had not offered her a genuine apology, the athlete decided to put the issue behind her.

The agency also announced that Kim left for China yesterday to take part in the Artistry on Ice skating event in Shanghai that will take place Sunday. The agency added she was not “running away” from th
e controversy.

The lawsuit was brought by Kim on May 30 after a comment by Hwang on a radio show May 22 about Kim’s student teaching practical. Hwang likened Kim’s practical at a girls’ high school to a “performance.”

“It is nothing but a show performed by a celebrity,” he said. “I don’t think Yuna has attended lectures faithfully in past four years. It is very unfair for normal students who must study hard … and celebrities like Yu-na earn their degrees very easily by showing their face for a few hours at special events.”

Figure skating champion Kim Yuna has pledged a donation to a Catholic institute to open a school in South Sudan.

“Kim Yuna visited the Seoul office of the Salesians of Don Bosco on Saturday afternoon and donated the W70 million needed to open a school in South Sudan,” the institute said on Sunday (US$1=W1,179).

Kim met Father Vincentius Donatti (84) and Brother Giacomo Comino (73), who aim to build 100 schools in South Sudan. “I had a chance to visit Togo a year ago as part of efforts to win support for Korea’s bid for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and I felt the need to help out children there,” Kim told the clergymen. “I want to offer what little support I can,” she added.

Donatti said one of the schools to be built in South Sudan will be named after Kim and asked the athlete to come visit the school after it is completed.

Donatti, who is famous for composing many Korean religious hymns, came to Korea in 1964 and has devoted himself to taking care of children -- both here and in Sudan -- for about two decades. Comino has also worked in Korea for 20 years and another 20 years in Sudan.

Comedian Kim Mi-hwa apologized for her radio show guest’s comment that denounced Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kim Yuna’s practice teaching session as “a show.”

Last Tuesday, Kim had Hwang Sang-min, a psychology professor at Yonsei University, as a guest on her radio program on CBS. The two talked about figure skater Kim Yuna, who is also a senior at Korea University majoring in physical education, and takes part in practice teaching sessions at Jinseon Girls’ High School in Seoul.

During the show, Hwang said that it would be a “correct expression that Yuna performed a show rather than doing a practice teaching session.”

His comment enraged fans of the Olympic star, and host Kim also felt the criticism as well.

Kim posted an apology on Twitter on Friday.

“We’re sorry to Yuna. Our producers’ intention wasn’t meant to be like this,” Kim said in a reply to a message posted by a teacher from Jinseon Girls’ High School. “We are trying to deliver our apologies in next week’s show.”

These days, it’s hard to land on any channel that isn’t playing something related to the “it” guy, Kim Soo Hyun. This may be a drama, interview, variety show, or commercial.

After becoming a household name due to the hit drama “The Moon That Embraces The Sun”, Kim has snagged 17 new endorsement deals. This tops even the record of figure skating queen and Korea’s national darling, Kim Yuna. Kim Yuna had amazed the public for boasting 15 endorsement deals in 2009.

His deals include those for a fabric softener, laptop, outdoor goods, suits, cosmetics, sports products, ice cream, jelly, soft drinks, coffee, beer, camera, telecommunication, and pizza. In fact, he’s the first male solo endorsement model for a very well-known fabric softener, following in the footsteps of previous models Kim Hye Soo and Soo Ae.

Speculators are saying that his deals sum up to an amount over 6 billion won. Most A-list celebrities are said to have endorsement deals worth about 300 million to 350 million won.

Figure skating champion Kim Yu-na is pictured in a math textbook for U.S. high school students. She appears in the part introducing trigonometry. In the U.S., math textbooks commonly feature photos of sports stars' performances to explain geometry.

The textbook published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt features Kim twice, presenting the following problems: calculate the angle created by a figure skater's jump; and calculate the angle according to the number of rotations when a figure skater performs an axel jump. It does not identify her.

The U.S. publisher has not obtained a prior permit from Kim, but her management agency said since the purpose is not commercial but educational, they have no plan to take legal action.

Korean high school textbooks deal with the same concepts, but rarely try to relate them to subjects that may be familiar to students. Experts say Korean textbooks follow the Japanese educational model, which focuses heavily on rote learning.

U.S. math textbooks teach students to suggest they can apply what they learn in their daily lives, according to Lee Chung-kuk, head of CMS Education. "Korean textbooks are full of difficult content and fail to suggest how mathematics affects our daily lives. So students often don't understand why they have to learn the subject", he said.

The Education Ministry here recently announced plans to upgrade math education, including adding storytelling features to textbooks, but students will not benefit until 2017.
