[News] Idols attack the market with their bold hairstyles

With an influx of new idol groups arriving almost every week, idols seem to have taken new means to get noticed in the music industry.

Some may think it’s only rookies who worry about standing out during their debuts, but it has been revealed that some veteran idols have now really started to take notice and change their hairstyles to show their individuality during promotions.

What’s the newest marketing technique for rookie groups? According to marketing and promotions staff, it’s a shocking hairstyle that will get a group noticed. For rookie singers it’s essential to have at least one member donning a bold style to make the group identifiable.

Such things can be said about JYP Entertainment’s newest girl group, miss A. While it was known that the girls had strong skills in both singing and dancing after netizens watched their videos, it was still member Jia’s bold pink hairstyle that caught the eyes of news media and netizens. Fellow idol group, U-Kiss, were also widely recognized after debut for their unbalanced cuts and member’s blonde hair.

U-Kiss’ own hair stylist agreed and shared,

“In order to stand out and survive amongst the many rookie singers, groups have been put their style point on their hair. When it comes to groups, if the entire group has unique hairstyles, it would cause a dispersion, so we have been putting emphasis on one member’s hair.”

While rookie idols are given crazy and bold hairstyles, the veteran idols such as BoA and Big Bang’s Taeyang focus more on the overall concept and music. Having already showed their true talent, it’s easier for the experienced singers to become recognized without a bold hairstyle.

Taeyang’s short mohawk is now widely recognized even in a silhouette as the singer has rarely made any changes to the hairstyle since debut and has admitted to only drastically changing it two times. But with the five-year anticipation of BoA’s comeback, she decided to go blonde and wear a flower-like wig for her promotions.

Another stylist shared, “When a singer comes up with a new album, they spend lots of time discussing their visual concept with the staff. If rookie singers go for a bold change, veteran idols choose concepts that don’t damage/ruin their original colors, while creating new colors to show to their fans.”
